WhatsApp Launches Meta AI Incognito Chat Feature

WhatsApp has introduced an incognito chat mode in Meta AI messaging.

Users can click a new icon to start an incognito session during one-on-one chats with Meta AI, which is also being launched in the standalone Meta AI app. Incognito chats are handled in a secure environment, and even Meta cannot view them.

Conversations are not saved; messages disappear by default after closing the chat. Exiting the app or locking the screen will also end the context, and Meta AI will lose the chat history.

Meta had previously implemented AI message summarization and drafting features on WhatsApp through Private Processing technology. The Incognito Chat is a further extension of this technology, placing AI reasoning entirely within a Trusted Execution Environment, achieving zero logs on the server side.

Zuckerberg's team continues the end-to-end encryption logic, extending privacy from person-to-person conversations to person-to-AI interactions. Meta has faced regulatory scrutiny and user concerns over AI training data privacy, and this move aims to lower the barrier for discussing sensitive topics.

Similar to OpenAI's temporary chats or Anthropic's privacy mode, Meta directly positions "Meta cannot access" as a core selling point, currently in the early stages of transitioning from data collection to privacy-first in AI consumer applications.

Essentially, this represents a shift in privacy rights: traditional AI products retain conversation logs for continuous optimization and ad monetization, while the Incognito mode transfers pricing and data control from the platform to the user, cutting off server-side data pathways through hardware-level secure execution environments, forcing the industry to shift from "data is king" to "privacy is the product."

Privacy is not a feature; it is the ticket to the next track.
The more the platform can see, the less users dare to ask; the less the platform can see, the more users are willing to pay.
Selling data earns a moment, selling trust earns a decade.
