The back revealed auction marks and a canvas stamp; records show that the piece sold for £21 at Christie's in London in 1966, but how it ended up in the charity shop that same year remains unclear. Auction house expert Alice Strang confirmed the author, and the sitter was reidentified as Cadell's frequent model May Easter, rather than the initially suggested Bethia Hamilton Don Wauchope. The piece was titled "Interior: Woman in Black" and belongs to Cadell's Edinburgh studio period of the 1920s.
