U.S. Diesel Average Price Breaks $6, Setting Historical High

The U.S. diesel retail average price has risen to about $6.07 per gallon, with California around $8.00, both setting historical highs just before the peak diesel season.

The American Automobile Association reports a national average of $6.0556 per gallon; GasBuddy, tracking over 150,000 gas stations, shows the national average reached $6.00 on Thursday night and $6.07 on Friday morning. The California average is about $7.98 to $8.00, with some stations displaying a maximum of $9.999. A week ago, the national average was about $5.85, and a year ago it was around $3.70 to $3.71, marking a year-on-year increase of about 63%. During the same period, the national average for regular gasoline was about $4.29.

There are significant interstate price differences: Washington around $7.05 to $7.06, Hawaii about $7.00, Oregon about $6.41, Nevada about $6.38; the lowest prices include Oklahoma around $5.60, Missouri and Louisiana around $5.65, and Mississippi and Texas around $5.66 to $5.67. GasBuddy reports that 28 states set new historical highs for diesel prices on that day. October diesel futures had previously surpassed $5 per gallon. WTI crude oil futures reached $100 per barrel on Thursday, the first time since May.

The supply side is impacted by multiple factors: shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which carried about one-fifth of the world's crude oil before the conflict; ongoing attacks on Russian refineries by Ukraine; U.S. diesel inventories are about 13% lower than the five-year average; and the industry estimates a global diesel supply loss of nearly 8%. The EIA's short-term outlook has revised the average annual price of U.S. highway diesel for 2026 from $3.66 in 2025 to $5.07, and expects it to drop to $4.40 the following year. GasBuddy's oil analyst Patrick De Haan stated that U.S. households are spending about $711 million more on gasoline and diesel daily compared to last year, warning that record oil prices could reignite inflation along the supply chain, leading to higher costs during the holiday season.

California contributes over one-third of the nation's vegetables and two-thirds of its fruits, and high diesel prices directly increase field and cold chain costs. The market is expected to continue pricing in an upward trend for the national average this year, with $6.60 seen as a key observation point.

Market mechanisms indicate a repricing of refined oil and transportation costs, not solely driven by gasoline sentiment. Demand comes from rigid consumption by trucks, agricultural machinery, railroads, and construction equipment, while supply is constrained by low inventories and spot shortages following disruptions to Russian distillate oil exports. Beneficiaries include refineries and traders with available diesel and cracking profits; those under pressure include freight companies billed by the mile, farmers, and ultimately food and delivery bills. Funds are shifting from retail pump prices up the supply chain to the CPI weights in transportation and food.

Additional data: The federal diesel tax is 24.4 cents per gallon, higher than the gasoline tax of 18.4 cents; diesel competes with heating oil and jet fuel for the same distillate capacity. If the national daily excess fuel spending continues to expand, analysts suggest it could approach $1 billion per day.
