X has integrated Grok into XChat group chats. The help center specifies that Premium+ users can add Grok as a member of any XChat conversation to ask questions. The official account also states that group chats are now smarter, allowing users to directly request answers from Grok within XChat.

Once added, Grok can answer questions, summarize unread messages, create shared reminders, and generate images or videos within the app. The September testing documentation also mentioned time awareness and summarizing chats since joining. During the testing phase, users can call out Grok by name and insert it into conversations like other group members. The official help center refers to this as adding a member rather than opening a separate bot window.

The encryption boundaries are outlined on the product page. Both one-on-one and group chats in XChat use end-to-end encryption, with group messages and media encrypted, and session keys provided to each member. Once images or messages are sent to the Grok tab, the sent version is no longer encrypted, while the content in the original conversation remains encrypted. If Grok is added as a member, X and SpaceXAI can read all messages in that conversation from the time of joining to removal to provide functionality. Group invitation links, group names, and avatars themselves are not encrypted and can be public.

This follows the encrypted chat feature launched earlier this year. The developer documentation states that group chats and one-on-one chats use the same encryption model, rotating session keys when members change. On September 30, the X Chat interface was updated to version 2.169, enabling group management, admin applications, invitation links, join requests, mute settings, pinning, message lifespan, and anti-screenshot settings. On October 2, Elon Musk simply stated that users should ask Grok questions in XChat.

Early use cases were categorized into fantasy sports debates and family group chats. Privacy concerns also arose, as the help center noted that during Grok's time in the group, the platform and model provider could see messages. There has been no announcement regarding the maximum number of group members, generation limits, or availability outside the U.S.

This is a subscription feature, not an advertising space. The buyers are U.S. Premium+ users, while the sellers are X's messaging layer and SpaceXAI's model. The money from the annual fee goes into reasoning and generation, and questions, summaries, images, and videos in the group do not leave the app. Those who benefit are those who want to keep searches and reminders within the group thread. Those under pressure are those who still need to switch to independent chatbots and those who consider family or work groups as default encrypted spaces. Removing Grok will cut off subsequent reading, and the history before joining is not within the reading range promised by the help center.
