Musk stated that evidence of outstanding ability is more important than any other qualifications when discussing hiring standards. This statement comes from an interview he gave to German automotive media "Auto Bild" in 2014, which has recently circulated widely on social media.

He emphasized that the core method of judgment is to see whether candidates have truly tackled tough problems: "Have they faced real challenges and overcome them?" It is also important to verify accountability: if someone has significant achievements, it should be confirmed whether they were primarily responsible or if others contributed more. His reasoning is that usually, those who have struggled with problems truly understand them, and the harder the problem, the less likely they are to forget it.

He made it clear that degrees are not a threshold: "You don’t even need a college degree, not at all, not even a high school diploma." In his view, graduating from a top university may indicate that a person has the ability to achieve great things, but it is not a necessity. He cited examples of Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, and Steve Jobs, all of whom did not graduate from college, stating, "But if you have the chance to hire them, it’s certainly a good idea." His conclusion is that if someone has a record of outstanding achievements, that achievement is likely to continue into the future.

He has repeatedly reaffirmed this standard. In 2019, at the U.S. Air Force's "Space Pitch Day" event, he condensed the question into one sentence: "What have they done that clearly demonstrates their outstanding ability?" In February 2020, he was recruiting for Tesla's AI team on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "A PhD is not required at all," and "I don’t care if you graduated from high school," but all candidates must pass a "hardcore programming test," with selected candidates reporting directly to him.

All three individuals he named are dropouts. Gates dropped out of Harvard University in 1975 to start Microsoft; Jobs dropped out after just one semester at Reed College; Ellison dropped out from both the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago before founding Oracle. Musk himself holds dual bachelor's degrees in physics and economics from the University of Pennsylvania and entered Stanford University for a PhD in 1995, but dropped out two days later to start a business.

In market mechanisms, employers are buyers and job seekers are sellers, with degrees historically serving as the "standardized credential" for both parties. Musk's standards shift the pricing basis from credentials to verifiable records of achievement. This aligns with the current job market: data from the New York Fed shows that the unemployment rate for recent college graduates in the U.S. is about 5.6% in Q2 2026, with an underemployment rate of 42%; a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers indicates that nearly 70% of employers have adopted skills-based hiring.
