Axelar Network Discovers Theft of Assets Bridged to Secret Network via IBC, Approximately $4.67 Million

Axelar Network announced the discovery of an incident affecting assets bridged from the Axelar chain to the Secret Network via IBC, with approximately $4.67 million in tokens stolen.

The issue is limited to the ICS-20 smart contract on the Secret side. The Axelar emergency committee has disabled the relevant connections and contacted exchanges and law enforcement agencies.

Axelar emphasized that the core protocol and other integrations remain unaffected, and the team is preparing a post-incident analysis report.

With frequent cross-chain bridge security incidents, the seller (Axelar) responded quickly to isolate risks, while bridging users are under pressure, accelerating the flow of funds towards cross-chain protocols with strict audits.

Axelar, as an important cross-chain infrastructure in the Cosmos ecosystem, faced a vulnerability in the IBC bridging to the Secret side contract, similar to previous bridge hacking incidents, highlighting the security challenges of IBC connections in a complex multi-chain environment.

In terms of capital pathways, Axelar's emergency disabling of connections and preparation of reports indicate a focus on security audits and emergency mechanisms, motivated by the need to quickly mitigate losses and maintain ecosystem trust, reducing the long-term impact on overall liquidity.

Similar to historical bridge incidents like Wormhole and Ronin, cross-chain infrastructure is currently in a phase of continuous security enhancement, and Axelar's actions demonstrate its responsiveness. This essentially involves technical alternatives and risk management, where contract vulnerabilities expose bridging risks, shifting pricing power towards cross-chain protocols with rapid emergency and auditing capabilities, promoting the concentration of funds towards safer infrastructures.

The more convenient the bridging, the higher the risk of vulnerabilities; security audits are always lagging behind. $4.67 million evaporated overnight, and the IBC connection is a new attack surface. Disabling isolation is a loss mitigation strategy, post-incident analysis serves as a lesson, and rebuilding trust takes time.
