Investor Julian Weisser stated that Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is a love letter to San Francisco from Warren Hellman and his family. The festival is free to the public, has no sponsors, and has been held annually since 2001.

Warren Hellman co-founded Hellman, Ferri Investment Associates in Boston in 1977 with Paul Ferri, which was later renamed Matrix Partners, with early investments including Apple and SanDisk. In 1984, he returned to San Francisco and co-founded the acquisition firm Hellman & Friedman with Tully Friedman, serving as chairman. He previously worked at Lehman and became president at the age of 39 in 1973.

Hellman personally funded this bluegrass festival in 2001, held in Golden Gate Park, with a clear mandate to remain free and non-commercial. He passed away in 2011 due to complications from leukemia treatment at the age of 77. That same year, Speedway Meadow in the park was renamed Hellman Hollow. The family has continued the festival, with his daughter Patricia Hellman Gibbs stating that as long as the city wants it, the family will continue.

The 26th edition will take place from October 2 to 4, 2026, covering Hellman Hollow, Lindley Meadow, and Marx Meadow, with six stages. Organizer spokesperson Jim Merlis confirmed that around 4:45 PM on October 4, all entrances were closed for about an hour due to the park reaching capacity, marking the first time in the festival's history that all entrances were closed. The organizers did not disclose attendance estimates, but San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie stated on social media that 60,000 people attended the park for free performances that week.

Early family materials stated that the festival gathers over 90 bands, with annual attendance exceeding 750,000 at times. Hellman expressed in 2007 that he always hoped the festival would remain free and non-commercial. His children and grandchildren formed Purple Glaze and Marco and the Polos, performing at the 25th edition in 2025 as a tribute to Warren and his wife Chris.

The funding path does not involve ticket sales or sponsors. Costs are continuously borne by the Hellman family trust, with no fees for attendees and no naming rights for brands. The beneficiaries are the attendees and local businesses around Golden Gate Park, while the commercial music festival model that relies on ticket sales and sponsorships is under pressure. This is not a transactional event, but rather a private capital commitment written as a permanent expense.

Hellman was the great-grandson of early Wells Fargo banker Isaias W. Hellman. Among his children, Frances Hellman served as chair of the physics department at UC Berkeley, Mick Hellman founded HMI Capital and serves as a senior advisor to Hellman & Friedman, and Patricia Hellman Gibbs was involved in founding a free clinic in San Francisco.
