Hugging Face CEO: Local Open Source AI Advances Over Twice the Speed of Moore's Law

Clement Delangue, co-founder and CEO of Hugging Face, posted that the intelligence advancement speed of local open source AI has exceeded twice that of Moore's Law on unchanged hardware.

Hardware: From May 2024 to May 2026, the top-spec MacBook Pro will still have 128GB of unified memory, with almost no hardware improvement.
Model: The strongest open source model that can actually run on this device scored 10 points on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index for Llama 3 70B, jumping to 47 points for DeepSeek V4 Flash (Antirez mixed Q2 GGUF quantization).

A 4.7 times improvement in 24 months, equivalent to doubling intelligence every 10.7 months, while traditional Moore's Law is a doubling every 24 months.

This data visually demonstrates the explosive progress made by the open source community in model architecture, quantization technology, and inference optimization over the past two years. Efficient models like DeepSeek V4 Flash, combined with advanced quantization schemes such as GGUF, have enabled top models that previously required data centers to run efficiently on consumer-grade laptops, significantly lowering the barrier to AI usage.

On the capital front, this trend is accelerating the shift of AI from "cloud centralization" to "local/edge distribution." Individual developers, small and medium enterprises, and users in emerging markets can access powerful capabilities without relying on expensive GPU cloud services, which will reshape the speed of AI adoption and the industry landscape in the long run.

Structural judgment: Essentially a technological substitution. The compounding growth of algorithms and engineering optimization (rather than hardware) has directly replaced the reliance on high-end hardware, pushing AI capabilities from "those who can afford hardware" to "those who can use open source models." Capital, talent, and application scenarios are concentrating towards the open source community and efficient inference technologies.

Hardware doubles in two years, AI software doubles in ten months.
The best progress is not buying a better computer, but making the same computer 4.7 times smarter.
Whoever masters model compression and local inference will hold the true pricing power of democratizing AI.
