Cloudflare announced the acquisition of the Deno team, co-founded by Node.js creator Ryan Dahl, to merge its open-source project celld with Cloudflare's workerd, simplifying self-hosted deployments of Workers and Durable Objects.

Deno has raised a total of $26 million, including $21 million in a Series A round led by Sequoia in 2022, primarily for the development of Deno Deploy and commercial products, focusing on a more secure JavaScript/TypeScript runtime.

After the acquisition, the Deno runtime will continue to be maintained for one year with monthly fixes and security updates, after which official development will cease but it will remain open-source; Deno Deploy will close six months after the acquisition, providing migration support to Cloudflare Workers for paying customers.

Celld is an open-source daemon recently launched by Deno for running Workers and Durable Objects models on private infrastructure, with Cloudflare's Ryan Dahl and co-founder Bert Belder leading the integration of its code and concepts into workerd.

The JSR registry will continue to operate but will migrate its infrastructure to Cloudflare, and the rusty_v8 bindings will also receive ongoing support and integration with workerd, allowing developers to use the same programming model on Cloudflare's network or their own servers.

Through this acquisition, Cloudflare gains an engineering team experienced in self-hosted runtimes to address the shortcomings of workerd in distributed coordination, while the Deno team ends its independent runtime path to focus resources on making the Workers model a mainstream server-building approach.

Developers and enterprise customers are migrating from independent Deno Deploy to Cloudflare Workers, shifting funding and attention from maintaining an independent runtime to Cloudflare's edge and self-hosted capabilities, benefiting the Workers platform while other independent JavaScript runtimes face competitive pressure.
