McDonald's and Whirlpool warn of reduced consumption among low-income consumers.

Management from McDonald's and Whirlpool issued the same warning: low-income families in the U.S. are facing increased cash flow pressure and have cut back on non-essential spending.

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski stated that consumer anxiety is rising, while CFO Ian Borden pointed out that high oil prices are particularly impacting low-income customers, who have reduced their dining expenditures; high-income consumers show relatively stronger spending resilience.

Whirlpool CEO Marc Bitzer reported a significant decline in demand for large home appliances. North America President Juan Carlos Puente described the current industry contraction as "recession-level," with demand for discretionary appliances down about 15%.

Kraft Heinz CEO Steve Cahillane also noted that some low-income families have "almost no money left" by the end of the month and are tapping into savings to fill cash flow gaps; the company believes that years of food price increases have continuously eroded consumption levels.

Consumer pressure in the U.S. shows a clear stratification: low-income families prioritize cutting back on fast food, upgrading food brands, and durable goods, while high-income families continue to support some services and discretionary spending. Therefore, corporate revenues depend not only on overall consumption levels but also on the income structure of their customer base and product pricing tiers.

Market mechanisms indicate that rising oil prices, food, housing, and basic bills first compress the discretionary cash flow of low-income families, leading to less dining out, stronger discount demand, and delays in large purchases like appliances. Beneficiaries include Walmart, discount retailers, private labels, and low-cost package providers; pressured are companies reliant on middle- and low-income customers, with higher pricing and demand that can be postponed, such as dining, packaged foods, and durable goods.
