Shopify co-founder and CEO Tobi Lütke stated on David Senra's podcast that most companies have the wrong approach to hiring. His duty is to make the company deserving of the best and brightest talent, which is often overlooked by everyone.

The statement can be divided into two parts. The first part is that when there is a talent shortage, the first reaction is to find a stronger recruiting team. He believes that one must also make the company worthy of the kind of talent they want. The second part is a preemptive statement that may be misinterpreted: the talent issue will eventually resolve itself. The reason is not that positions will disappear, but that there are not many good companies worth working for.

He singled out the most capable individuals. These individuals have the option to start their own companies, so not many companies are worthy of their attention. Senra added that the real goal is to make one's company one of the few that the strongest people in the world want to join. Lütke did not set the standard based on compensation rhetoric.

In the same segment, he defined "deserving" in terms of office space, how much internal inefficiency needs to be addressed, and how much political maneuvering can be reduced from the system. He believes that the impact itself is more important. He also mentioned that he did not move to Silicon Valley because he was capable of creating a geographical consensus on the East Coast, making people believe that Shopify is the best place to work. The standard is the kind of company he wants to build for himself.

This episode was recorded on January 18, 2026, with Senra opening with a reference to 21 years of operation. The public introduction notes that Shopify started as a snowboarding shop in Ottawa in 2004, with Lütke becoming CEO in 2008, and going public in 2015 with a valuation of $1.27 billion. The podcast page states that the platform serves over 4 million merchants across more than 175 countries, with a market capitalization later exceeding $200 billion.

This is not about adjusting the hiring budget, but about the order of bids for high-capacity labor. The supply side consists of those who can start their own businesses, while the demand side consists of companies filling gaps with recruiting teams. If money flows first to headhunters and employer branding, while the company itself remains filled with inefficiencies, the most capable individuals will not enter the market. The beneficiaries are the few companies deemed worthy of joining. The pressure is on management that views talent shortages as a recruitment function issue without improving company and decision quality.
