Matt Cynamon of Union Square Ventures stated that writing checks does not equate to being qualified to give advice. He also announced that Nikhil will remain at USV as an investment partner and will sit down with Fred Wilson to compare notes from their nearly forty-year difference in entering the industry.

Nikhil is the first person in the 20-year history of the analyst program to be allowed to stay and be promoted internally. He wrote on September 14 that he joined the analyst program three and a half years ago, initially on a fixed-term role; nine months ago, the team offered him the opportunity to stay and be promoted to investment partner. After the promotion, he began to sit in the lead seat of the program, but investment decisions are still made collectively.

Cynamon recounted an early lesson from Fred Wilson. When Wilson was about 29 years old and joined a board, he immediately gave advice, only to be stopped by a founder who told him to first do a week in every role before listening. Wilson flew to Buffalo to complete this. He had previously publicly shared the same story about Jordan Levy, whom he invested in in 1991 when he was about 30 years old, and who said he had never run a company and would not listen to advice. After completing a week, the founder was willing to listen, but did not adopt much of it.

This discussion includes chapters on: why difficult founders are the most profitable; obtaining qualifications before giving advice; missing out on FOMO projects and then spending six months trying to get in; biology becoming programmable and open to outsiders; why knowing less allows for seeing more; how to compete with a $100 billion venture capital firm; why Fred took his company public; what USV misjudged about founders; the moat that AI has not yet broken is the network effect; and who wins when AI becomes a multiplayer game.

The FOMO section has prior public records. In June 2026, Wilson mentioned in another discussion that USV had participated in FOMO's Series B, and he stayed late at a holiday gathering not to judge the team, but to persuade them to take the money. The chapter title suggests giving up first, then spending six months squeezing in. The $100 billion firm was not named.

This is a partnership seat and narrative transaction, not a new fund closing. The buyers are the USV partners, and the sellers are candidates after the analyst term ends. For the first time in 20 years, the project is keeping someone, shifting funding and project leadership from the analyst track, which only allowed entry, to a position of investment partner that can lead investments. Beneficiaries are junior investors who want to turn their terms into promotion pathways; those under pressure are traditional venture capital actions that trade checks for board seats and then output advice. The network effect being kept separate indicates that USV still considers accumulable user relationships as a moat that AI has not dismantled.
