Naval Ravikant, co-founder of AngelList, reflected on his entrepreneurial motivations, stating that he has changed his focus three times: first wanting to be a founder, then pursuing money and power, and finally achieving success through curiosity.

In the first phase, titles overshadowed projects. He decided, "I want to start a company," and then sought partners and ideas, with impure motives. The second phase shifted to money and influence. He admitted that no one wanted to talk about it, but this was a fundamental drive, yielding mediocre results. Looking back, the most rewarding projects stemmed from pure curiosity, with insights later transforming into investments and companies.

Born in India in 1974, he later became a U.S. citizen and briefly worked at Boston Consulting Group. In 1999, he co-founded the review site Epinions with Nirav Tolia and others, raising a total of $45 million from firms like Benchmark Capital and August Capital. The company was acquired by Dealtime in 2003 through a stock swap and merged into the subsequently listed Shopping.com. A lawsuit among the founders was settled in December 2005.

In 2007, he established an early-stage fund, The Hit Forge, with a size of $20 million, investing in Twitter, Uber, and Stack Overflow. That year, he co-authored Venture Hacks with Babak Nivi, breaking down investment terms. In February 2010, this blog evolved into AngelList, initially just an email list sent to about 25 angels, with approximately $80 million pledged in the first year. The platform later incorporated Product Hunt, and in 2022, AngelList Venture raised funds at a valuation of $4 billion.

In 2014, he co-founded the crypto fund MetaStable Capital. Regulatory documents from June 2017 indicated a management scale of $69 million, with investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. His early investments also included Postmates and Yammer. His current standard is to create things he wants to use, that others cannot do well or quickly, and to work only with friends he truly admires and wants to collaborate with long-term.

After material needs are met, he claims people become extremely bored. Retreating to a corner to meditate becomes tiresome, and he believes pure hedonism is a dead end; what remains is self-actualization, or creation. Creating is more fulfilling than consuming and allows for learning in the process. He wishes he had this understanding 20 to 30 years ago.

The buyers are users and co-investing angels willing to pay for products they would use, while the sellers are projects that treat founder titles and funding amounts as goals. This is not a transactional event; it is a shift in allocation standards: money flows from chasing positions to platforms that can explain terms and aggregate similar capital. Those benefiting are individuals with reusable judgment and syndicate networks, while those under pressure are teams that rely solely on titles for funding and switch topics when faced with difficulties.
