Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham posted on October 4, stating that English students select only a few subjects in their last two years of high school, usually three, making gender differences in interests more visible than in the U.S.

He did not provide names of subjects, numbers, or percentages in his text. The judgment falls on the education system. In the last two years, focusing on three subjects, what is chosen and what is not will directly appear on the timetable. U.S. high schools maintain multiple subjects until graduation, with individual interests spread across the overall timetable.

In England, A-levels are typically completed in two years, with the mainstream being three subjects studied simultaneously, though some study four. The curriculum is linear, with exams at the end of Year 13 covering two years of content. Northern Ireland and Wales still retain a modular system, allowing for AS qualifications in the first year. University applications primarily consider these subjects, rather than a full timetable.

The post did not compare exam results nor did it state whether differences stem from ability or choice. It only mentioned that when everyone must give up most subjects early, interest differences are less likely to be masked by common compulsory subjects. Specific numbers in the graph are not included in the text.

This is not an education policy proposal. Graham did not name schools, genders, or majors. Y Combinator has also not announced any changes to admission standards. The sentence was placed on an account frequently viewed by the founder, but the content is a comparison of education systems.

In market mechanisms, there is no buying or selling. The event is driven by an observation of the education system. British universities and employers see three subject grades, while American universities see a broader course list. Benefiting is the admission system that uses a few subjects for selection, while the pressure is on interest differences that only become apparent in the last two years, as they are no longer averaged out by a common timetable.
