At least fifteen universities in the U.S. have total costs exceeding $100,000 for the 2026-27 academic year, covering tuition, room and board, books, transportation, and other expenses. A year ago, only about two schools had crossed this threshold. Data from Princeton Review, cited by several media outlets, indicated that 16 schools were counted in June, depending on whether certain insurance and miscellaneous fees were included.

The highest price tag is at California's Harvey Mudd College, approximately $104,512; followed by Duke at about $103,975, the University of Chicago at around $103,821, the University of Southern California at about $103,162, and Barnard at around $103,000. Washington University in St. Louis, Smith, Fordham, Claremont McKenna, Vassar, Wesleyan, New York University, Georgetown, Colgate, and Haverford also made the six-figure list. Brown, Columbia, and Cornell are close but mostly still slightly below $100,000.

This is the sticker price, not what everyone pays. First-year students with financial need at these schools receive an average financial aid package of about $42,000 to $79,000, which does not need to be repaid. Harvard, Pennsylvania, Yale, and MIT have tuition-free policies for undergraduates from families earning up to about $200,000. Education author Jeff Selingo states that the six-figure threshold has been a long time coming, and now that it has arrived, more families are looking at state universities.

In terms of return on investment, these 15 most expensive schools do not rank equally high. Several liberal arts colleges in New England would see their costs rise even more if airfare and health insurance were included. Schools like Colorado College and the University of Miami fluctuate around the $100,000 mark depending on whether health insurance is mandatory.

According to the College Board, the average tuition and fees for public two-year colleges are far lower than those for private non-profit four-year institutions. Rising sticker prices and declining net prices can coexist: high-income families still face bills close to the full price, while middle- and low-income families are supported by financial aid. Administrative costs, mandatory fees, and campus services have been criticized as part of what drives up total costs, while schools use financial aid discounts to maintain enrollment structures.

In market terms, the sellers are the seats and housing packages at private elite schools, and the buyers are families who can pay full price or prove their need. Funds flow from middle-class savings and federal loans into a competition of sticker prices and financial aid cross-subsidies. The beneficiaries are schools with substantial endowments that can treat full-price families as profit centers; the pressured are families whose income just barely misses out on large subsidies but are not easily able to write checks. The event-driven aspect is that the psychological barrier has been collectively breached, rather than a sudden change in cost structure in any given year.

Additionally, whether schools include health insurance and travel accounts for the difference between 15 and 16; net prices vary by family, and the national average "out-of-pocket" cannot be directly extrapolated from the highest sticker prices.
