The Ministry of Defense of Moldova reported that against the backdrop of Russia's nighttime airstrikes on Ukraine, five drones entered the country's airspace from the direction of Ukraine without permission, and another flying object was found on the ground. The Ministry stated that the unauthorized overflights occurred due to the Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, and the authorities are continuing to monitor the airspace with partners to ensure public safety.

The flight paths of the five drones were published by the Ministry of Defense minute by minute. The first drone crossed the border near Belyaevka at 3:56 AM heading towards Palanka, and returned to Ukraine one minute later; the second drone appeared over Caplani from the direction of Old Kozache and disappeared from radar near Karahasan at 4:10 AM; the third drone entered at 4:09 AM, flying over Palanka, Crocmaz, Orășeni, Păulcari, and Lăsăuți, losing signal near Pervomaisc in the Dzhok area at 4:24 AM; the fourth drone entered at 4:16 AM towards Palanka and then turned back towards Ukraine; the fifth drone entered near the Seț—Lesnoe border at 5:50 AM and left for Ukraine at 6:02 AM. Some of the targets lingered over Moldova for about 11 to 12 minutes.

The ground object was discovered by a citizen near the Kishinev to Bălăbănești highway, who reported it to the police, which secured the perimeter. The incident occurred on the 35th anniversary of Moldova's independence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the five airspace violations and one landing as a serious threat to sovereignty and citizen safety. The Ministry of Defense did not disclose the type of the fallen object or whether it was armed in the initial report.

This is not a one-time deviation. On August 22, a drone preliminarily identified as Shahed-138 entered from Odessa Oblast, flying for about 17 minutes before returning; on August 24, another drone entered from Vinogradovka into Cahul and then exited from Cahul County towards Romania, with a temporary restriction in the southern airspace for 15 minutes, while Romania deployed F-16s and helicopters for monitoring. Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi recently called for an urgent strengthening of air defense, stating that Russia continues to violate airspace with aircraft, endangering the public and civil aviation in transit. President Maia Sandu previously distinguished between "accidental incursions" and "deliberate tests of response," noting similar trajectories in Romania and Poland.

Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Moldova's airspace has been illegally crossed about 70 times, with some drones crashing in fields, yards, or on rooftops. Most of the active radars are old Soviet models, and low-altitude targets at about 100 meters have previously gone undetected by the national system, requiring data exchange with Ukraine and Romania to fill the gaps. The president stated that global demand for air defense equipment has made it difficult to acquire even with funding, and the country is negotiating with partners for detection and interception capabilities, as well as promoting legislation and manufacturing for drone interception.

In market terms, this is a security incident stemming from the spillover of war, not a commercial transaction. The buyers are Moldova's defense budget, which must replenish radars, optics, and interceptors, along with EU and NATO aid channels; the sellers are manufacturers of radars, anti-drone systems, and interceptors. Funding flows from Kishinev's military budget and partner assistance towards detection networks and southern border monitoring. Beneficiaries are air defense suppliers receiving orders and neighboring military forces providing intelligence sharing; those under pressure are southern residents, transiting civil aviation, and the national air defense system lacking complete low-altitude coverage. The driving force of the incident is clear: Russia's saturation attacks with drones on Ukraine are pushing flight paths out of the border, with neutral small countries passively bearing the costs of crashes and airspace closures.
