Apple Launches First Foldable iPhone Duo

Apple unveiled its first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, at the "Surprise and Shine" event in Cupertino, presented by new CEO John Ternus alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series.

The device features a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, both with the same aspect ratio; the inner display area is approximately 50% larger than that of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It has a titanium frame, a custom hinge with over 100 precision parts, IP68 rating, and a side button integrated with Touch ID, which can be unlocked using an Apple Watch. The inner display has a nano-texture to reduce glare, and the front camera is hidden beneath the display layer. It is powered by the A20 Pro chip and a self-developed C2 modem, with a dual 48MP main camera and ultra-wide camera on the back, but lacks the variable aperture found in Pro models. The inner display supports video playback for up to 31 hours, while the outer display lasts about 44 hours, with balanced usage around 24 hours.

Pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with a maximum of 2TB priced around $3,199, available in star white and night sky colors. Pre-orders begin on October 16, with sales starting on October 23. Apple Pencil support will be available later this year. iOS 27 supports dual app usage and orientation flexibility, with Netflix, Zoom, and Slack already optimized for the device. Ternus stated that while other foldable devices feel like two phones stuck together, the Duo aims to provide a natural large-screen experience like an iPad when opened.

Foldable devices still account for less than about 2% of global smartphone shipments. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Ultra are priced around $1,900 and $2,100, respectively, with the Duo positioned between the two. The same A20 Pro chip starts at about $1,199 in the iPhone 18 Pro, with the price difference mainly attributed to the hinge, second screen, and dual batteries.

Market dynamics indicate a premium for high-end hardware: beneficiaries include the supply chains for panels, hinges, and titanium, as well as software vendors needing to maintain app distribution in foldable formats; those under pressure include Samsung, which has dominated the foldable market for years, and Apple's internal models that still follow traditional pricing. Funds from pre-order deposits will enter production capacity in October, with actual shipments depending on yield rates, not just applause at the launch event.

Forecasts for foldable market share from institutions like Counterpoint have yet to be validated by sales. Whether the $1,999 price can replicate the upgrade rhythm of the standard iPhone will depend on the repair rates of hinges and creases during mass production.

Apple delayed the foldable release until the hinge could pass IP68 and the crease was less detectable by touch, resulting in a wide screen with a passport ratio instead of two Airs folded. Ternus used "One more thing" to present the first flagship as a form revolution, yet the chip is the same as the 18 Pro released that day, indicating a premium on institutional components. Touch ID returns to the side button because the inner screen's hole is hidden under glass, altering the biometric path with the form change.

Capital has already been locked into panel and hinge production capacity, and the launch event serves to open the pre-order window. The $1,999 price elevates foldables from early experimental pricing to above standard flagship pricing, forcing Samsung to compete with the Ultra tier. The application side must adapt to split-screen and orientation switching; otherwise, the large screen will only be for video viewing. The C2 modem continues to reduce reliance on Qualcomm, making foldables a new carrier for self-developed RF.

Comparing the eight-year iteration after the first Galaxy Fold's failure and the iPad mini as a pocket-sized large screen. The industry has shifted from a flat parameter competition to form control: whoever gets developers to write two sets of interfaces for the same aspect ratio first will take the foldable software layer.

This represents a technological substitution: the largest flat screen is replaced by a foldable canvas, but the system remains the iPhone rather than a new tablet category. The mechanism is that latecomers hedge the educational costs of early categories with yield rates and system continuity, anchoring prices near competing Ultra models rather than the 18 Pro.

  1. Latecomer foldables sell hinge yield, not the first curved glass.

  2. Same chip with an $800 premium, with the price difference reflected in institutional components.

  3. Category accounts for less than 20% of shipments, yet pricing is set at flagship levels.
