Wormhole Announces Official Shutdown of Moonbeam Network on July 31

Wormhole announced that the Moonbeam network will officially shut down on July 31, 2026.
During the transition period, the Moonbeam parachain will continue to operate, but after the shutdown, Portal and Wormhole contributors will not be able to assist in recovering on-chain assets. Users are advised to transfer external assets through official channels.
Previously, Moonbeam announced its exit from the Polkadot ecosystem and will migrate GLMR tokens 1:1 to the Base network.

Moonbeam, as an early representative of Polkadot parachains, focuses on EVM-compatible smart contracts. This complete shutdown and migration to Base reflects its strategic adjustment from the Polkadot ecosystem to Ethereum L2; Wormhole, as cross-chain infrastructure, emphasizes the asset transfer window in its announcement, highlighting liquidity management for multi-chain projects exiting.

In terms of capital flow, the Moonbeam team is shifting resources from the Polkadot parachain to the Base ecosystem, directing funds towards L2 gas fee optimization and user migration incentives, motivated by Base's better liquidity and developer adoption as a Coinbase-supported L2; the 1:1 migration of GLMR reduces user migration friction but also marks a contraction of the Polkadot DeFi branch.

This aligns with the ecological adjustments of other Polkadot parachains (such as Acala and Astar) and the trend of multiple EVM chains concentrating towards Ethereum L2; the current Layer 1 competition is in a phase of integration from multi-chain to a few high-performance L2s, with Moonbeam's shutdown serving as a case of further slimming down the Polkadot ecosystem.

Essentially, this represents a restructuring of the industry chain: the migration of Layer 1 parachains to L2, driven by L2's comparative advantages in security, liquidity, and gas costs, forces early independent blockchain projects to complete ecological transformation through token migration and asset bridging to avoid marginalization.
