Google Launches Video Selfie Login for Account Recovery
Google has launched a video selfie login feature, allowing users to verify their identity and access or recover their accounts by recording guided head movement videos.
Users first complete a multi-angle video registration in front of their device's camera, then re-record a new video for matching verification. The system includes live detection to prevent deepfake attempts, with videos encrypted for storage and can be deleted at any time.
This event drives users towards biometric backup logins, with funding directed towards Google's identity verification and AI live detection infrastructure, benefiting the retention of the Google account ecosystem while putting pressure on traditional passwords and third-party recovery services.

Google has previously introduced passkeys to replace passwords, assisted in unlocking through contact recovery, and deployed facial unlock on Pixel devices, while also suing cybercrime organizations using AI for fraud and launching fake call detection, creating a continuous path to strengthen account control.
Google is investing resources into its identity and security teams and AI models for live detection and encrypted biometric data storage, motivated by reducing user loss due to lockouts, binding personal data ecosystems through multiple verification methods, similar to previous capital investments in Gemini and Cloud.
In comparison to Apple's Face ID used for device authentication since 2017 and Microsoft's Windows Hello extended to account recovery, Google is currently in a phase of expanding from password dominance to biometric backup, filling the gap in cross-device lockouts.
This essentially represents a technological replacement: deepfake technology forces upgrades in live verification, with the mechanism being that large companies centralize biometric data and AI computing power to form authentication barriers, making it difficult for small and medium service providers to replicate, accelerating the centralization of identity verification towards platforms.

The cost of convenience is the permanent custody of biometric data.
Deepfakes compel live verification, and live verification compels platform monopolization.
