DeFi Asset Management and Risk Analysis Company Gauntlet Completes $125 Million Financing with Exclusive Investment from SBI Holdings

DeFi asset management and risk analysis company Gauntlet has completed a $125 million financing, exclusively invested by Japanese financial group SBI Holdings, which was finalized in June this year.

This is Gauntlet's largest round of financing since its establishment in 2018, far exceeding the $24 million Series B led by Ribbit Capital in 2022 (at that time, the valuation was $1 billion). The company was founded by former Wall Street quantitative trader Tarun Chitra.

Gauntlet initially focused on stress testing and vulnerability analysis for DeFi protocols, later transforming into a "vault curation" business, helping institutions manage digital asset allocations through quantitative analysis. Current clients include Apollo, Coinbase, and Circle.

ABAB AI Insight

Gauntlet founder Tarun Chitra, as a former Wall Street quantitative trader, has led the team from early DeFi risk analysis to timely transformation into vault curation as the interest in DAO governance declined, accurately capturing the institutional demand curve for quantitative risk control and yield strategies.

On the capital front, SBI Holdings' exclusive investment of $125 million far exceeds previous financing scales, directly injecting traditional Japanese financial capital, motivated by leveraging Gauntlet's quantitative models to layout in the global digital asset management market, specifically through resource synergy with institutional clients like Apollo, Coinbase, and Circle, accelerating the penetration of traditional finance into on-chain asset allocation.

Similar to traditional quantitative funds expanding from the stock market to crypto assets, Gauntlet is currently in a mature expansion phase transitioning from DeFi risk tools to an institutional-grade vault management platform, with SBI's strategic investment marking the importance of Asian capital in U.S. DeFi infrastructure.

Essentially, this represents capital concentration: DeFi risk management platforms undergoing institutional transformation are attracting significant investments from traditional financial giants, driven by the scarcity of pricing capabilities of quantitative models for yield strategies and risks, pushing capital from early protocol services towards high-net-worth institutional vault management.

  1. Timely transitioning from protocol tools to institutional vault services is the structural key for DeFi risk companies to survive.

  2. Exclusive large investments from traditional financial capital often signify that a vertical track has completed institutional validation.

  3. The stronger the quantitative capability, the greater the pricing power in managing others' assets.
