World Foundation Sells WLD Tokens to Raise $52.5 Million

The nonprofit organization World Foundation, behind the World protocol, has raised $52.5 million in new funding through a strategic sale of WLD tokens, with all tokens locked for one year.

The first round of delivery was led by Pantera Capital, with investors including Bain Capital Crypto and Eightco Holdings. The tokens are intended solely for internal use within the World Network and do not represent equity in Tools for Humanity.

The fundraising is event-driven, with funds directed towards expanding World ID infrastructure, benefiting the human verification ecosystem while putting pressure on purely AI identity-related projects.

World Foundation (formerly Worldcoin), supported by Sam Altman and others, distributes World ID and WLD tokens through iris-scanning Orb devices. This non-equity token sale further reinforces its nonprofit positioning.

In terms of capital, crypto funds like Pantera provide funding in the form of locked tokens, with resources aimed at combating AI deepfakes in identity infrastructure, motivated by the desire to expand the verification network and serve enterprise and AI agent scenarios.

Similar cases can be seen where other protocols expand through token sales rather than equity financing, currently in an expansion phase driven by the explosive demand to "prove humanity" in the AI era.

Essentially, this represents a technological substitution, where biometric identity becomes a key infrastructure to distinguish humans from AI, attracting capital to bypass traditional equity structures and directly support network growth.
