Ukraine's SkyFall Launches Thor Hammer Suicide Drone

Ukrainian defense technology company SkyFall announced its medium-range strike drone, Thor Hammer, on October 1, claiming it is their first medium-range strike platform. There are two range options, with a maximum of 350 kilometers and 600 kilometers. The company is also developing a variant with over 1000 kilometers range, which has not yet been delivered.

The company stated that the drone has been used on the front lines. The warhead weighs between 40 to 50 kilograms and can be equipped with fragmentation, explosive fragmentation, or other types. It has a maximum speed of 180 kilometers per hour, a wingspan of 3.5 meters, a body length of 3 meters, a maximum flight altitude of 4000 meters, and is equipped with white light and/or thermal imaging cameras. Deployment time is approximately 18 minutes. The unit price ranges from $25,000 to $30,000 depending on configuration.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has completed the coding for the drone, and procurement channels are open. SkyFall plans to increase production capacity to a maximum of 5000 units per month by the end of 2026, and will provide its own software, operator and technician training, as well as 24/7 technical support. The company is also developing domestically produced engines for medium-range strikes to reduce reliance on external power suppliers.

The launch method is described by the company as either ejection or boost, capable of being deployed from fixed platforms or mobile launchers such as trucks. When communication is available, it can be operated from a remote command post, with links including satellite communication or other encrypted systems. Navigation is described as a combination of satellite, inertial, and backup positioning, with the terminal phase capable of using artificial intelligence and computer vision for target alignment. These are configurations announced by the company, not independent test results.

The 1000-kilometer version is still under development. The target of 5000 units per month is the production capacity goal by the end of the year, not the current shipment volume. The 350-kilometer and 600-kilometer variants are already available. Interfax-Ukraine and Militarnyi both quoted the same set of figures provided by the company on October 1.

The buyer is the Ukrainian defense system that has incorporated it into procurement, while the seller is a domestic drone company that has reduced the unit price to $25,000 to $30,000. This reflects an order expectation driven by product release, not an already realized monthly production. The beneficiaries are frontline units looking to replace expensive cruise missiles with low-cost medium-range strikes. The pressure is on the production capacity still reliant on external engines and imported parts, as well as the external interpretation of the 600-kilometer range as fully validated.

If the end-of-year production capacity is realized, the theoretical monthly payload corresponds to 40 to 50 kilograms of warheads multiplied by 5000 units. The company has not disclosed the current monthly production volume, nor the timeline for the 1000-kilometer variant.

The SkyFall product line follows the path of Ukraine's private military industry post-2022: first creating a mass-producible flight platform, then getting the model coded by the Ministry of Defense. The Thor Hammer is claimed by the company to be the first medium-range strike drone, indicating that its previous main business was not in this range segment. The unit price of $25,000 to $30,000 targets disposable use rather than recoverable aircraft. Since 2023, Ukraine's long-range strike drones have included rear fuel depots and airports as regular targets, and this time, the 40 to 50-kilogram warhead and 600-kilometer range have been standardized.

Resource mobilization focuses on production capacity, not individual machine performance. If the end-of-year goal of 5000 units per month is realized, the buyer is purchasing continuous consumption, not a batch of samples. The domestically produced engine is listed separately because the existing range options are still constrained by external power supply. The Ministry of Defense coding only indicates that procurement can occur, not that a monthly order of 5000 units has already been placed. The 1000-kilometer variant is still under development, and funding and parts must first meet the needs of the 350-kilometer and 600-kilometer variants.

A comparison can be made with Iran's Shahed-136, which turned low-speed, low-cost, long-range consumption into a mass-produced weapon, and Turkey's Bayraktar, which initially grew its drone company through export orders. The difference is that the Thor Hammer's buyers are primarily domestic frontline units, with a lower unit price and a speed of only 180 kilometers per hour. The industry position is in an expansion phase. Medium-range strikes are transitioning from modified airframes to products with coding, unit prices, and production capacity goals. Validation still comes from company statements and claims of frontline use, not publicly available batch acceptance data.

Structurally, this represents a technological substitution. The cost of a single medium-range strike has been reduced from the million-dollar range of cruise missiles to tens of thousands for disposable airframes. The mechanism is that production volume spreads the uncertainty of a single hit across monthly capacity, with the 40 to 50-kilogram warhead not aiming for single-shot destruction but for sustained delivery. Pricing power thus shifts from missile stockpiles to those who can deliver monthly. The target of 5000 units is a goal; delivery is the condition for whether the substitution is valid.

  1. The advantage of consumables lies not in single shots, but in monthly production capacity.

  2. Coding opens procurement, but does not mean that orders have been fully placed.

  3. Range is written into the variant, meaning it has not yet entered inventory.
