Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Says Coinbase Is Building a Modern Financial Account With Crypto Rails and an AI Interface

Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong said in a post on October 29, 2026, that the financial services industry is undergoing two major technological shifts: crypto and AI. He said that crypto is replacing the underlying rails: stablecoins can enable instant, nearly free cross-border transfers of funds, tokenization allows anyone to hold all kinds of assets, and on-chain markets support 24/7 trading; AI is replacing the interface, with agents acting on users’ behalf to research, decide, execute, and pay.

Armstrong said Coinbase is using these frontier technologies to build the best modern financial account, covering functions such as trading, payments, savings, and lending. The company just released its third-quarter 2026 earnings, and despite a difficult market, it set multiple product records. The company said the amount of crypto assets it stores is among the highest globally, it holds more than 80 licenses, average USDC balances in its products set a new all-time high for the 14th consecutive quarter, and Coinbase One paid subscriptions set a new all-time high for the fifth consecutive quarter.

The company said its share of crypto trading volume has increased for the fourth consecutive quarter, nearly doubling from a year earlier; prediction markets generated more than $200 million in annualized revenue in the third quarter, making it one of the fastest-growing products in history, and average daily traders increased by more than 60% quarter over quarter. Armstrong said the work is not finished until the entire financial system is updated with these frontier technologies.

The above are Armstrong’s original post and the company’s earnings statement.

ABAB AI Insight

Armstrong positioned Coinbase as a provider of a modern financial account that connects crypto rails and an AI interface. On the crypto side, he emphasized stablecoin payments, tokenization, and 24/7 on-chain trading; on the AI side, he emphasized agents that can perform actions on users’ behalf. The company’s earnings show that in a softer market environment, subscription and services revenue (including stablecoins) accounted for nearly half, and prediction markets became a fast-growing source of revenue.

The company’s disclosed highlights focused on USDC balances reaching record highs for a consecutive period, growth in Coinbase One subscriptions, successive gains in trading-volume market share, and increases in prediction-market annualized revenue and average daily traders. Net income of $719 million was mainly driven by gains on crypto holdings, while adjusted net income was $78 million. The result is that the company is using progress toward an “everything exchange” and a regulatory-licensing base as grounds for continued expansion, but the specific rollout and revenue contribution of AI agent products were not quantified separately in this earnings report.

Public information here is mainly from the CEO’s original post, the company press release, and the SEC filing.

  1. Use stablecoins, tokenization, and on-chain markets as the rails for payments and trading, while using AI agents as the user interface.

  2. In a market with pressure on trading volume, use USDC balances, subscription services, and prediction-market revenue as diversified sources of growth.

  3. Consecutive quarterly gains in market share and product records are presented as evidence of progress toward an “everything exchange.”
