SpaceX and Qualcomm collaborate to provide infrastructure for Starlink Mobile’s nationwide terrestrial 5G network in the United States, with deployment starting in 2027

On November 4, 2026, Qualcomm Technologies announced that SpaceX had selected its Dragonwing cellular infrastructure platform to support Starlink Mobile’s nationwide terrestrial 5G network in the United States. Under the multi-year agreement, Qualcomm will supply the Dragonwing QRU100 and QDU100 platforms, as well as commercial-grade Layer 1 software, combined with massive MIMO radio and baseband technology to support large-scale base station deployment.

Starlink Mobile will use 64-transmit, 64-receive (64T64R) massive MIMO radio units, aiming to improve coverage, capacity and spectrum efficiency. SpaceX plans to begin nationwide deployment in the United States in 2027, with tens of thousands of sites to be deployed during the multi-year agreement period. The terrestrial network is intended to combine with Starlink’s direct-to-device satellite capability to form an integrated space-ground network.

Michael Nicolls, senior vice president at Starlink, said the cooperation between the two sides can accelerate the development of end-to-end base station architecture. A Qualcomm executive said this will help advance U.S. 5G infrastructure and lay the foundation for future AI-native 6G. Financial terms were not disclosed; Qualcomm told the media that this is its largest 5G deal to date.

Starlink currently mainly provides direct-to-device services through satellites, but it has limitations in indoor coverage and high-capacity data. This cooperation with Qualcomm focuses on terrestrial base station infrastructure, enabling Starlink Mobile to build a traditional cellular network and complement its satellite capabilities, with the goal of becoming one of the major mobile operators in the United States and competing with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

SpaceX had previously obtained mid-band and low-band spectrum resources, providing a spectrum foundation for the terrestrial network. Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platform emphasizes massive MIMO and energy efficiency, making it suitable for large-scale deployment across tens of thousands of sites. Qualcomm described the cooperation as its largest 5G deal, showing its business expansion from terminal chips into network infrastructure.

The deployment timeline is to begin in 2027, while the specific timing of consumer service launch, coverage priorities and the pace of competition with existing operators remain unclear. Points to watch include spectrum utilization efficiency, base station deployment speed and the seamless handoff performance of the integrated space-ground network in actual use.

  1. The infrastructure supply agreement and network deployment plan are cooperative arrangements; the actual number of base stations and coverage area depend on subsequent construction progress and regulatory approvals.

  2. The combination of terrestrial 5G and satellite direct-to-device service is a complementary architecture, rather than a simple replacement for existing cellular networks.
