Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao: Continued Working After Missile Incident

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao recalled that one day earlier this year, while lying in bed handling work, his window suddenly shook. He got up and went to the balcony, seeing a smoke trail left in the sky.

Zhao lives on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, facing Iran across the Persian Gulf. At that time, Iran had just launched a missile towards the UAE. He has long suffered from chronic pain and often works while lying down; after seeing the trail, he returned to bed to continue working.

He later stated that more people die in traffic accidents than from missiles, and that security here is very good. This attack has been described as the beginning of a regional geopolitical crisis, and he did not interrupt his work that day.

Zhao, 49, returned to Abu Dhabi after serving his sentence and remains the majority shareholder of Binance. His residence is a nine-bedroom villa, equipped with four bodyguards and a chef, and his yacht is named Da Moon. The New York Times estimates his wealth at $114 billion.

Before settling in the UAE, he had no fixed country of residence. He was born in China and moved to Canada with his family at the age of 12, later working in technology between New York, China, and Japan. Now he travels across Asia on a private jet, providing regulatory advice on cryptocurrency to governments.

The incident did not prompt him to sell his shares or relocate. The buyer remains the controlling shareholder who treats Abu Dhabi as an operational base, while the seller is not from the secondary market. The missile strike impacts regional risk premiums, and he compares personal risk to traffic mortality rates to deem it acceptable. The beneficiaries are those who continue to treat the Gulf as a headquarters alternative, while the pressured parties are regional assets that consider the same airspace as a risk for routes, energy, and personnel.

The villa's security consists of four bodyguards and local area protection. He did not provide details on the missile's landing point, interception results, or casualty figures.

Changpeng Zhao turned Binance into a decentralized exchange in 2017, and after pleading guilty in 2023, he established his personal base in Abu Dhabi instead of returning to Canada or China. Saadiyat Island faces Iran across the Persian Gulf, and the four bodyguards, chef, and yacht named Da Moon are part of his life configuration after retaining control. He also travels on a private jet to provide regulatory advice to Asian governments, with his personal itinerary arranged as official visits.

His stake in Binance was not affected by the missile. In early 2025, MGX invested $2 billion at a valuation of $75 billion, later settling with USD1; the same Gulf capital also holds stakes in OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic. Zhao continued working from bed, effectively excluding geopolitical shocks from equity decisions. Chronic pain only changed his working posture, not his status as majority shareholder.

Comparable are family controlling shareholders who remained in Beirut during the Lebanese banking crisis after 2019, and commodity traders who continued working in Dubai after the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. Zhao's current phase is one of consolidating control: his U.S. sentence has ended, a pardon has been granted, and the new variable is the Gulf airspace, not equity dilution.

The essence is the transfer of pricing power. The missile changed the regional risk premium, not Binance's control. The mechanism is that he compares the probability of death to traffic accidents, thereby maintaining Abu Dhabi as the same base for regulatory advice, sovereign fund investments, and private residence. Security is claimed to cover missile risks, allowing equity to remain with the original holders.

  1. The residence is chosen for jurisdiction, not scenery.

  2. The missile alters the premium, but equity does not move.

  3. Risk is compared to car accidents, so decisions do not change.
