Meta Acquires AI Data Analytics Platform Sundial, Founders Return

Meta has acquired the AI data analytics platform Sundial, with former Meta employees Julie Zhuo and Chandra Narayanan joining the company along with some team members.

Sundial was founded about six years ago, automating data cleaning, semantic layer creation, SQL writing, and narrative generation, with clients including rapidly growing AI companies like OpenAI and Gamma; after the deal is completed, it will cease services to external clients.

The platform transforms complex data into actionable insights through natural language, enabling teams to perform self-service analysis without relying on a central data department; it has raised approximately $23 million in funding, including a $16 million Series A round led by DJ Patil in July 2025, with participation from Sequoia and others.

The company will be integrated into Meta's new data organization DATA (Data Analytics Tooling & Agents), led by Alex Schultz, who became the first Chief Data Officer in July; Narayanan will be responsible for data analytics tools and agents.

Zhuo previously served as Vice President of Product Design at Meta, while Narayanan was responsible for analytics at Instagram and Facebook; both started before the AI wave, later pivoting to become AI-native, and experienced client scale expansion and shutdowns.

The acquisition internalizes Sundial's technology and talent to meet the demand for insights driven by AI; the beneficiaries will be Meta's internal analytics capabilities and decision-making speed, while the original external clients (including competitors) will lose access, with funding shifting from independent startups to large company integration.

Zhuo and Narayanan founded Sundial after leaving Meta, similar to other former employees starting tool companies; historically, Meta has absorbed related capabilities through acquisitions, and Schultz's shift from marketing to the role of Chief Data Officer reflects internal restructuring.

In terms of capital pathways, small-scale funding followed by acquisition by a large company integrates technology and personnel into a new unit; the motivation is to strengthen internal analytics tools and agents under the infinite demand for AI, while reclaiming capabilities that previously served competitors, with Narayanan leading the tools work.

This is analogous to other large companies acquiring analytics or AI tool startups (such as data platform integrations); currently, it is in a phase of transitioning from external self-service analysis to strengthening internal decision-making infrastructure.

Essentially, this represents capital concentration and technological substitution: through acquisition, AI analytics capabilities are transformed from independent products to internal systems, replacing or enhancing existing processes; the mechanism is driven by a surge in demand for insights and talent return, causing external tools to be absorbed to improve speed and control.
