iFixit teardowns of the iPhone Duo analyze fractures along the inner screen hinge area

Several early iPhone Duo users reported that soon after unboxing, the inner screen developed fractures along the hinge area, with some cases accompanied by bright lines or unusual sounds. On October 25, iFixit released a teardown and, through CT scanning and a 3D hinge model analysis, suspected that the central support bar may not have descended fully or that the bent rail may not have retracted in time, possibly creating stress concentration on the soft display when folding the device shut.

iFixit said the damage was mostly concentrated in the transition area between the flexible cable opening and the central hinge support, and that dust entering the hinge could also cause unusual sounds. Apple has published a support document for hinge troubleshooting, and some users reported going to an Apple Store and receiving on-site replacements.

The scale of the issue is not yet clear. Most reports show the fault appearing after a relatively small number of normal open-and-close cycles, with no obvious signs of external impact.

ABAB AI Insight

Multiple reports of inner-screen fractures along the hinge appeared on the iPhone Duo’s first day on the market, and the failure location is highly consistent. iFixit’s teardown offers a possible explanation at the mechanical-structure level, focusing on hinge-support movement and stress concentration rather than simple user mishandling.

Apple has published an official hinge-troubleshooting document, and some users have received on-site replacements. The early concentration of failures increases attention on assembly or design tolerances.

Metrics to watch include changes in the number of subsequent failure reports, whether Apple issues software or hardware fixes, whether iFixit or other teardowns further confirm the specific failing part, and whether the replacement policy remains consistent.
