Robinhood Co-founder Vlad Tenev: On-chain Developers Exceed Expectations by Combining Meme Coins and Stock Tokens
Robinhood co-founder Vlad Tenev praised the work of the company's on-chain builders in the podcast The Iced Coffee Hour, stating that developers have created unique liquidity pools and protocols that were not initially envisioned by the company.
These protocols combine meme coins, core crypto assets, and stock tokens. Meme coins are used as "entry points" or "reward mechanisms" to connect users to real stock tokens.
Tenev stated that the vision is to increase the proportion of U.S. households holding stocks from about 50% before Robinhood's inception to around 65%, with hopes of pushing it further to over 95%. Tokenization is a key method to make U.S. quality stocks and other real-world assets more easily distributed globally.
Robinhood Chain has launched, designed for real-world assets, providing economic exposure to over 190 U.S. stocks in overseas markets, supported 1:1 by underlying shares, and enabling 24/7 trading potential.
Market mechanisms are driven by retail users' demand for on-chain composable assets. Funds are shifting from pure meme speculation to hybrid pools that connect to real stocks, benefiting Robinhood and early on-chain protocol developers, while traditional brokers that only provide single asset entry points are under pressure.
Tenev emphasized that tokenization can allow U.S. quality assets to reach a global audience while increasing household stock ownership rates.

Vlad Tenev has continued to push for settlement and access reforms since the GameStop incident, transforming the traditional T+1 settlement pain points into a narrative of on-chain instant settlement. Robinhood started with zero-commission stock trading and gradually added crypto, prediction markets, and private equity tokenization, forming a dual track of "retail entry + on-chain infrastructure".
In terms of capital pathways, the company has built its own L2 (Robinhood Chain) to make stock tokens a core primitive, allowing developers to freely combine meme coins with real assets. The motivation is to expand global distribution and user retention, rather than simply earning trading commissions. Overseas, U.S. stock tokens supported 1:1 have been launched, while domestic efforts are delayed due to regulatory restrictions.
A similar path can be seen in Coinbase's nurturing of Base and traditional brokers testing RWA. Robinhood is in a transition phase from a "trading platform" to an "asset issuance and distribution platform," with meme coins being repositioned as customer acquisition funnels rather than endpoints.
This essentially belongs to the reconstruction of the industry chain. The access and settlement barriers of the traditional stock market are broken by on-chain composability, allowing retail capital to switch directly between speculative and real asset exposures within the same pool. The mechanism is self-referential liquidity: memes attract traffic, traffic settles into stock token holdings, and holdings feedback into protocol value.
