Apple Requires App Preview Screenshots for iPhone Duo Starting April 2027

Apple has released submission guidelines for developers regarding applications and games for the iPhone Duo foldable screen, clarifying adaptation requirements.

At the bottom of the announcement, it states that starting from April 2027, both new applications and updates must include preview screenshots sized for the iPhone Duo when submitted for App Store review; otherwise, submission will not be allowed. This rule forces developers to complete adaptation preparations for foldable screens by April next year.

The iPhone Duo features a book-style foldable design, with an outer screen of approximately 5.4 inches and an inner screen that expands to about 7.6 inches. Applications not adapted for the large screen will still display centered as a regular phone size when unfolded, leaving blank spaces or black borders around, rather than filling the entire inner screen.

Apple has opened optimized application submissions built with Xcode 27.1 and provided screenshot specifications, design templates, and App Store Connect preview tools. Optimized applications can display an adaptation badge on their product page, encouraging dynamic layouts to accommodate foldable, half-open, and different orientations.

Russian blogger romancev768 confirmed the actual performance of the device in an unboxing video: non-adapted applications maintain their original phone size display when the inner screen is unfolded, consistent with the official documentation. The device will be launched on October 23, with pre-orders already open.

The market views this as an increase in entry barriers for the developer ecosystem, with funding and development resources shifting towards applications that adapt to large screens and multiple orientations, benefiting developers who complete optimizations early and enhancing user experience, while putting pressure on applications that do not update in time and teams relying on old SDKs.

The screenshot requirements run parallel to SDK build rules; existing applications can still run but with limited experience until they are updated to include the required materials.

Apple launched its first foldable screen iPhone Duo at the September 2026 conference, simultaneously opening developer resources and Xcode support. Historically, the App Store screenshot and minimum SDK version requirements have gradually pushed platform adaptation, similar to previous mandatory transition strategies for new iOS versions and screen sizes.

In terms of capital, developers need to invest resources to recompile applications, create dual-screen screenshots, and test multi-orientation layouts, shifting resources from existing maintenance to new form optimizations. Strategically, the April deadline places ecological costs upfront, ensuring a unified user experience post-launch rather than relying on spontaneous adaptation.

Comparing to the initial requirements for developers to adapt to both inner and outer screens for Samsung's Galaxy Z series foldable screens, Apple is currently in a new form expansion phase, promoting application layer compliance through entry rules rather than hardware mandates, positioning itself at the control node of the foldable screen ecosystem.

Essentially, this is a technological replacement and industrial chain reconstruction: the new foldable form changes the screen size and orientation during application runtime, with the mechanism of transferring adaptation costs to developers through submission thresholds, resulting in degraded experiences for unupdated applications, thereby accelerating resource concentration towards applications that support dynamic layouts.

  1. Screenshots are the entry ticket; non-adaptation leads to experience degradation.

  2. The deadline forces resource allocation, with ecological costs borne by developers.

  3. New form pricing power lies in the rules, while old applications remain centered with blank spaces.
