Starbucks to Spend $400 Million Annually on Software, Shifts to In-House AI System

Starbucks announced the development of internal AI tools to replace Microsoft's inventory tracking system and IBM's equipment maintenance management software, with some systems expected to be launched by the end of next year, aiming to cut annual software spending by about $400 million.

IBM's stock fell about 3%, Salesforce dropped 4%, and Microsoft also faced pressure.

Market Mechanism: Large enterprises use AI to assist in coding custom systems, reducing reliance on third-party software; traditional enterprise software vendors face valuation pressure due to event-driven factors, with funds flowing towards AI consulting and custom development services. Starbucks and others support a $200 million overall cost reduction plan through savings.

Starbucks has been promoting the development of its own POS system to replace Oracle Simphony for several years. CTO Anand Varadarajan emphasized that there are clear opportunities to reduce software spending, and this expansion to Microsoft and IBM tools continues the trend of enterprises moving from "purchased adaptation" to "AI-driven in-house development".

On the capital front, Starbucks is mobilizing internal tech teams and AI coding resources to build a single business operating system, integrating data and optimizing processes. The motivation is to lower long-term licensing and consulting costs while laying the groundwork for the correct processes for AI layering. The tech team has already achieved about $30 million in budget cuts this year.

Similar to how OpenAI and Anthropic have launched consulting businesses, or how companies historically shifted from ERP standardization to customization, this case shows that AI is currently in an expansion phase, accelerating the reconstruction of operational systems in large enterprises, with the moat of general software being eroded by the lowered barriers to building with AI.

Structural Judgment: Essentially, this is about technological substitution and industrial chain reconstruction. AI coding capabilities allow enterprises to shift from reliance on semi-adapted software to fully customized operating systems, with the mechanism being to reduce development costs and complexity, driving pricing power from traditional SaaS giants to AI-enabled internal development and professional consulting, which is a long-term benefit for process reconstruction rather than data accumulation.

  1. The more expensive semi-adapted software is, the more cost-effective AI in-house development becomes.

  2. Data entering the system is just the beginning; process reconstruction is the moat.

  3. When large companies abandon general tools, consulting and customization become the new oil.
