UK Tax Authority Confirms DeFi Deposits No Longer Considered Taxable Disposals

The UK tax authority has confirmed that depositing crypto assets into DeFi lending protocols and liquidity pools will no longer be considered taxable disposals.

Investors will not need to pay capital gains tax until a genuine economic disposal of assets occurs. This adjustment will officially take effect on April 6, 2027, amending the 1992 Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act.

This change will affect approximately 700,000 individuals and trustees using crypto lending and liquidity pool services.

The UK government has previously made several adjustments to its crypto tax framework, similar to the clarifications on staking income in the early 2020s, gradually optimizing to reduce barriers for early DeFi activities to attract innovative capital.

The capital flow into DeFi protocols and liquidity pools from UK investors will accelerate, motivated by tax deferral that lowers holding costs, strategically enhancing London’s competitiveness as a European crypto hub.

Similar to the gradual easing of DeFi compliance regulations in the EU and the US, the UK is currently in a phase of modernizing its crypto tax framework, clearly distinguishing between deposits and disposals to promote liquidity.

This is essentially a regulatory change, with the UK shifting the treatment of DeFi deposits from immediate taxation to deferral, aiming to reduce friction and accelerate capital concentration in the local DeFi ecosystem, thereby enhancing overall market depth.
