Lawson Convenience Store in Japan Launches JPYC Stablecoin Payment Pilot

Lawson, a convenience store chain in Japan, will launch a pilot for JPYC (a yen-pegged stablecoin) payments at its Gateway City store in Tokyo in early August.

This pilot is in collaboration with digital asset wallet provider Hashport, marking Japan's first stablecoin payment integration with a POS system.

After the POS integration, purchase data such as product quantity and payment time can be directly entered into the store management system. Lawson will verify the system's stability and actual payment time to decide on a subsequent full rollout.

Hashport previously collaborated with JPYC to launch a repayment feature within its wallet and promoted JPYC payment trials in Kyoto's vending machines. This expansion to Lawson's POS system continues its path for stablecoin retail implementation. On the capital front, Lawson is leveraging blockchain technology resources through Hashport to integrate stablecoin payments into traditional POS systems, motivated by testing efficiency in everyday consumption scenarios, strategically laying the groundwork for digital transformation in Japan's retail sector. Similar to the Chibo restaurant and vending machine pilot, this event signifies that the application of stablecoins in Japan is transitioning from experimentation to expansion in chain retail, with Lawson as a leader in industry technology adoption. Essentially, this represents a technological substitution: blockchain stablecoins are replacing a portion of cash/card payments, achieving unified data and cash flow through POS integration. The mechanism relies on a regulatory-friendly environment where the yen-pegged design reduces volatility risk, enhancing retail settlement efficiency. ABAB News · Cognitive Law
