Anthropic reportedly plans to begin IPO roadshow next week; valuation discussions fall to $1.2 trillion-$1.3 trillion

According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, Anthropic is reportedly planning to launch its formal IPO roadshow next week, and potential investors are currently discussing a valuation range of $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion, with some discussions even as low as $1.1 trillion. The related discussions are still ongoing, no final decision has been made, and an Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment.

Some investors at the beginning of October had believed Anthropic’s fair valuation could be as high as $2 trillion, and after the company held its latest financial briefing, they lowered their expectations to about $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion. After the Nasdaq 100 Index fell 6.4% on Thursday, wiping out about $2.3 trillion in market value in a single day, valuation expectations declined again. Democrats’ gains in the congressional elections also led investors to worry that the pace of data center expansion and its impact would face stricter scrutiny.

Stephan Kemper, chief investment officer of the German wealth management division at BNP Paribas, said that given the repricing in AI sector valuations, Anthropic’s valuation may need to be near the low end of the previously rumored $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion range, or even 10% to 15% below that level. Michael Alfaro, chief investment officer at Gallo Partners, said before Thursday’s selloff that Anthropic should set its valuation between $1.3 trillion and $1.4 trillion to build a high-quality order book of subscriptions.

David Rainville, technology portfolio manager at Sycomore Asset Management, said that if the valuation is set at the bottom of the range, such as $1.2 trillion, investors should not be hard to find. Max Kettner, chief multi-asset strategist at HSBC, said that around $1 trillion may be a more reassuring level, helping reduce the risk of sharp post-listing volatility. He stressed that secondary-market performance matters more than the headline of a “trillion-dollar IPO,” and that he does not want to see a pattern of a brief post-listing rise followed by a sharp selloff.

The report said Anthropic and the selling shareholders may first begin the roadshow with a more conservative offering size and valuation target, and then raise it based on initial investor feedback; another option is to delay the listing. Alexandre Baradez, chief market analyst at IG, said the selloff does pose some risk to the IPO, but entering the market after overly high valuations have already been digested could, on the contrary, be more favorable.

Anthropic’s IPO valuation expectations have been cut repeatedly over a matter of weeks, from as high as $2 trillion to the $1.2 trillion-$1.3 trillion range, reflecting a broad re-rating in AI sector valuations and a decline in market risk appetite. After the October financial briefing, expectations had already fallen from $2 trillion to $1.4 trillion-$1.5 trillion, and Thursday’s tech selloff widened the adjustment further, showing that investors are becoming more cautious in pricing high-growth AI companies.

On the capital-markets side, the feedback loop between potential investors and underwriters will determine the final pricing. Starting the roadshow at a lower valuation to improve order-book quality and then raising it depending on feedback is a common strategy for large IPOs; if market feedback remains weak, delaying the listing remains an option. Fears that Democrats’ advantage in Congress could trigger closer scrutiny of data center expansion may affect the pace of AI infrastructure capital spending, and in turn influence how Anthropic’s long-term growth story is priced.

Structurally, the downward revision in valuation changes Anthropic’s relative valuation gap with peers such as OpenAI, while also testing secondary-market demand for frontier AI model companies. Beneficiaries include institutional investors hoping to participate at a more reasonable price; the risk is that if post-listing performance is poor, it could affect the next window for tech IPOs. Analysts are largely focused on preferring slightly lower pricing to ensure stable post-listing performance rather than chasing the highest nominal valuation.

The final pricing still depends on actual order demand and changes in market conditions during next week’s roadshow. The current discussion range is clearly below earlier expectations, indicating that the market is re-evaluating the risk premium and sustainable growth path of AI companies.
