Solana Foundation Chair Says Blockchain is Essentially Financial Infrastructure

Lily Liu, Chair of the Solana Foundation, stated that blockchain is fundamentally financial infrastructure, rather than a general-purpose decentralized computing platform.

She pointed out that the argument of viewing web3 as a multi-application decentralized computing infrastructure has led to venture capital losses of billions of dollars, as it prioritizes application sovereignty over unified liquidity.

Liu believes that decentralization, neutrality, and censorship resistance are more important in financial scenarios, with capital formation achieved through liquidity markets enabling innovation and long-term large bets.

She mentioned that internet capital markets have the potential to become the largest global capital markets, requiring a combination of technology and financial thinking to provide new financial access methods.

Liu invited individuals interested in internet finance to join the Solana ecosystem and noted that industry talent with risk appetite is expanding towards new frontiers outside of blockchain.

Previously, she held a capital summit in Shanghai, gathering global allocators and builders to discuss innovative capital formation, and mentioned the IPO demand from small and medium-sized enterprises in China.

Funds and talent are concentrating towards unified liquidity and financial infrastructure, benefiting Solana as a settlement and capital formation layer, while the decentralized application sovereignty model is under pressure.

Lily Liu co-founded Earn.com (later acquired by Coinbase) and, after becoming Chair of the Solana Foundation, shifted the network's focus from a multi-application narrative to payments, stablecoins, and internet capital formation. She has emphasized tokenization and unified liquidity in multiple events, including hosting a capital summit in China.

In terms of capital pathways, Solana attracts institutions and developers through stablecoin settlements, payment channels, and asset tokenization, directing funds towards unified trading and collateral layers rather than isolated applications. Recently, it has hired former Binance and Polygon personnel to strengthen its strategy and payments.

Similar cases include Ethereum's early shift from general computing to a focus on DeFi and stablecoins, as well as the scale effects brought by unified liquidity in traditional finance. We are currently in a phase where blockchain is converging from experimental applications to financial infrastructure.

This is essentially a restructuring of the industry chain: programmable financial infrastructure takes precedence over application sovereignty, with unified liquidity becoming a core competitive dimension and increasing concentration in capital formation and settlement layers.
