Coffee Chain Blank Street Raises $75 Million at a Valuation of $650 Million

Blank Street has raised $75 million from investors including General Atlantic, with a latest valuation of approximately $650 million.

The six-year-old coffee chain currently operates over 100 stores, primarily in London and New York. The funds will be used for expansion on the U.S. West Coast, with plans to open new stores in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and Malibu, and has already opened in Studio City, Los Angeles.

The company is also diversifying its product offerings, adding categories like ice cream to target afternoon demand, particularly the fastest-growing sales window after 4 PM, aiming to become a "daily luxury brand" covering all day.

Matcha drinks are particularly popular among young consumers and have become a core part of the menu, alongside coffee, helping to boost sales per store and overall foot traffic.

The previous funding round valued the company at $500 million, with some investors hoping this round would approach $1 billion, but co-founder Issam Freiha stated that expectation was inaccurate.

Funding from General Atlantic and others supports store expansion and product extension, as retail consumer capital continues to bet on high-ticket, socially engaging coffee and matcha segments, directing funds towards new chains with a sticky young customer base, while traditional giants like Starbucks face pressure from market segmentation and event-driven growth.

Blank Street started in 2020 from a coffee cart in Brooklyn and rapidly expanded in 2021 with support from General Catalyst and Tiger Global, reaching a valuation of $500 million by 2025 and achieving some market profitability. It has previously entered high-density cities with a small store model, avoiding the heavy asset path of large chains.

This round of investment from General Atlantic is aimed at establishing a presence in high-income communities on the West Coast and expanding afternoon product lines like ice cream, motivated by converting single coffee purchases into all-day multi-scenario consumption, extending customer spending and dwell time. The capital path is shifting from early venture capital to private equity-supported scaled replication.

Similar to Joe & The Juice's multi-category expansion after acquisition by the same institution, and the capital-driven growth of premium coffee brands like Blue Bottle, Blank Street is currently in the expansion phase from a regional sensation to a cross-coast daily brand.

Essentially, this reflects capital concentration. Private equity funds are focusing on consumer brands with social sharing and young customer bases, enhancing unit economics through product extension and precise site selection, and using capital to accelerate the validation of the "daily luxury" model, replacing the scale-first logic of traditional coffee chains.
