YC S22 Startup Instant Announces Entire Team Joins OpenAI

Instant Team Joins OpenAI

YC S22 startup Instant has announced that its entire team has officially joined OpenAI. Instant provides backend infrastructure for AI Coding and Agents, covering databases, Auth, permissions, Storage, real-time synchronization, and offline caching, positioning itself as a Firebase alternative for AI coding tools.

The company's GitHub has surpassed 10,000 stars, serving over 17,000 users and 400,000 apps, processing a total of 2.5 billion transactions. Instant 1.0 was just released about a week ago.

Instant previously raised $3.4 million, with investors including Greg Brockman, Jeff Dean, Paul Graham, and former Firebase CEO James Tamplin. The official statement confirmed the team's joining OpenAI but did not disclose the transaction amount or whether it was a complete acquisition.

Instant Cloud will shut down: existing applications will continue to be supported for about 12 months, data backups will be retained for about 24 months, and the open-source version can continue to be self-hosted.

In terms of market mechanisms, OpenAI is strengthening its Agent infrastructure by absorbing the team, with funds and talent flowing from independent startups to large model companies. The beneficiaries are OpenAI's Agent capabilities, while the independent backend service ecosystem is under pressure.

Supplementary data indicates that users need to migrate within 12 months, and new registrations have been closed.

As a YC S22 project, Instant focuses on real-time synchronization and frontend usable databases, with users increasingly turning to use its services through Agents in recent years. The team quickly joined OpenAI after releasing version 1.0, indicating a strong demand from large model companies for foundational Agent infrastructure.

In terms of capital pathways, early investors included individuals related to OpenAI, leading to the team's complete absorption. The motivation is to directly inject mature real-time backend capabilities into OpenAI's coding and Agent product lines, accelerating the transition from model generation to complete application deployment.

Similar cases can be seen where OpenAI has previously absorbed startup teams to strengthen specific capabilities. Currently, it is in a phase of expanding model capabilities, with infrastructure talent being centralized.

The structural judgment indicates a technological replacement: independent BaaS is being internalized by large model companies, with the mechanism being that Agents require persistent state and real-time synchronization, prompting talent and technology to flow from decentralized startups to core platforms.
