CZ Holds Reservations on BNB Dedicated Phone Proposal

Binance founder CZ responded to BNB ecosystem member Spigg's suggestion of launching a BNB phone, stating that he rarely disagrees with the other party but holds reservations about the idea of carrying a crypto phone.

Spigg previously proposed developing a dedicated phone with a native integrated wallet, supporting instant payments and transfers, and centralizing access to all dApps within the BNB Chain ecosystem, believing this model would bring a different experience on BNB Chain, with similar products having precedents.

In his response, CZ did not elaborate on specific concerns nor explicitly oppose the launch of related products, only expressing uncertainty about the appropriateness of "walking around with a crypto phone," accompanied by a lighthearted emoji.

Subsequently, some in the community clarified that the phone is not meant to emphasize a crypto brand or store all assets but can serve as a regular high-end Android device, equipped with a secure hardware wallet, BNB dApp store, payment functions, and on-chain identity. CZ responded to this by saying, "Good point."

CZ further pointed out that security depends on the region; for example, wearing a high-value watch in Dubai poses a lower risk, while in other places it may face higher security threats.

From a market perspective, this discussion is a community-driven proposal rather than an official product plan, with funds and resources not yet directed towards hardware development. Ecosystem stakeholders and potential hardware partners may benefit, while pure software wallets and existing mobile entry points have not been impacted.

Additional information shows that similar dedicated crypto phones have been attempted on other chains, but user adoption rates and security incidents remain key variables. CZ's response did not announce any development timeline or investment plans.

CZ early on created the Binance exchange and promoted the use of the BNB token, linking fee discounts, on-chain transactions, and ecosystem incentives, allowing BNB to expand from an exchange token to a public chain and multi-scenario payment tool, while repeatedly warning users about hardware wallet security and supply chain risks.

His capital path has long focused on software and on-chain infrastructure, including exchanges, public chain scaling, and ecosystem incentives, rather than developing consumer hardware. His reservations about the dedicated phone reflect a priority to cover users through existing mobile applications and wallet entry points, rather than exposing assets to a single physical device.

Similar cases include Solana's attempt with the Seeker device and early blockchain phone projects facing challenges in user education and security costs. The current BNB ecosystem is in a phase of expanding from exchange traffic to public chain applications, with hardware entry still being exploratory rather than a core control point.

Essentially, this is a restructuring of the industry chain: the crypto ecosystem is extending from pure software interaction to potential hardware integration, but is limited by the security risks of physical devices and user behavior habits, with holders preferring decentralized storage rather than concentrating on a single portable device, thus affecting the pace of dedicated hardware advancement.

  2. Problems that software can solve may not be reduced in cost by hardware.
