Cloudflare engineer says spend cap feature for Workers and other products is coming soon
Cloudflare chief engineer Sid Chatterjee (@SidChatterjee) posted on October 26, 2026, that over the past three months the billing usage platform has been rebuilt to support spend management caps in the product catalog, starting with Workers and Durable Objects, and offering early access opportunities.
In a reply, Chatterjee said the current mechanism takes about 10 minutes, is near real-time, and will issue an alert when 80% of the cap is reached. The feature previously did not provide a hard spend cap, and developers had previously received high bills because of issues such as queue loops.
Cloudflare AI Gateway had previously launched a spending limit feature in June 2026, which can set dollar budgets by model, provider or custom metadata, and returns a 429 response after the limit is reached. This preview is aimed at a broader product catalog, including Workers.

Chatterjee said the feature would be shipping on Cloudflare for humans and agents shortly, and invited early tryouts via direct message. Previously, Cloudflare provided budget alerts and a daily usage dashboard, but the alerts were informational only and did not block usage.
One developer reported an approximately $36,000 bill due to an application loop, because there was no hard cap. The AI Gateway spending limit launched in June supports unified billing and bring-your-own keys; after the limit is reached, requests are blocked by default or fall back to a cheaper model.
The cap for products such as Workers is expected to stop service after the limit is reached, but the postpaid mechanism has an approximately 10-minute delay. The company did not announce a formal launch date or the full scope of product coverage.
