Ant Design Vue Author Reopens Video Editing Skill as Open Source
The main maintainer of Ant Design Vue stated that the project has accumulated over 22,000 stars since its inception in 2017 and previously earned about 3 million yuan through open source. It later shifted to a closed-source model, but the revenue did not exceed previous levels.
He has decided to open source again, launching the Pireel video editing project, positioned as a Skill that can be called by AI Agents.
Users can install and directly call it in environments like Codex by using npx skills add pireel/pireel-agent, intelligently matching themes for editing based on scenarios. It currently focuses on voice-over types and includes over 20 hyperframes themes.
Pireel emphasizes low barriers and Agent-driven functionality, distinguishing itself from traditional complex editing software, and supports further expansion into more scenarios and integration with third-party design Skills for customization.
The author of the open-source component library is returning to the open-source path after trying closed-source, with resources flowing back from independent product development to community-callable tools, benefiting the AI Agent ecosystem and content creators, while putting pressure on traditional editing software with high learning costs. This event-driven open-source Skill is being implemented in video workflows.

ABAB AI Insight
As a long-maintained enterprise-level UI library in the Vue ecosystem, Ant Design Vue's author previously achieved significant returns through open source before attempting closed-source commercialization, shifting from community contributions to proprietary products without breaking scale.
Resources are being redirected to video Skills callable by Agents, motivated by the advantages of open source dissemination and low-barrier distribution, embedding editing capabilities into workflows like Codex rather than standalone software.
Similar to the early open-source UI libraries and the current AI Agent plugin ecosystem, video tools are transitioning from desktop software to composable Skills, with the industry overall shifting from fully functional products to lightweight, scenario-driven calls.
This essentially represents a technological replacement, where traditional editing operations are taken over by natural language and Agents, with mechanisms in MCP and Skill protocols reducing integration costs and amplifying open-source distribution efficiency.
