AI Arms Race Drives Record Bond Issuance by Tech Giants

The Kobeissi Letter notes that from 2026 to date, Amazon, Alphabet, Nvidia, Meta, Oracle, and SpaceX have issued $182 billion in investment-grade bonds, an increase of approximately 1300% compared to the same period in 2025.

These six companies account for nearly 15% of the total corporate bond issuance in the U.S. this year, contributing to over 50% of the growth in corporate bonds this year. During the same period, there were 7 large bond transactions of $25 billion or more, 6 of which came from the aforementioned companies.

Tech giants have previously supported AI investments through stock buybacks and cash reserves. This large-scale bond issuance continues their path of financing massive capital expenditures with low-cost debt, with companies like Alphabet, Meta, and Nvidia continuously increasing investments in data centers and chips.

In terms of capital pathways, the AI arms race is driving companies to issue record bonds, motivated by the need to seize the window for rapid expansion of computing power and infrastructure, specifically converting the low debt costs in a low-interest-rate environment into long-term competitive advantages in AI, contributing to over half of the growth in the corporate bond market.

Similar to historical financing models in tech cycles, we are currently at a peak phase of capital-intensive investment in AI infrastructure, with large bond transactions concentrated among a few giants.

This essentially represents capital concentration: AI capital expenditures are driving the corporate bond market to tilt towards tech giants, with the mechanism being high return expectations supporting high levels of debt, as funds shift from traditional companies to AI-related firms, further reinforcing the barriers for leading companies in computing power and data.
