Peter Sellis announces he is joining X as Head of Product

Peter Sellis posted on X on October 26, 2026, announcing that he will join X as Head of Product. In his post, he said that he is a firm believer in SpaceX’s mission to extend human consciousness to the stars, so now is the time to make shitposting multiplanetary. He also said that X is currently the best way to understand what is happening in the world and discuss it, and said his goal is to continue making the product beautiful and useful in order to accelerate momentum for communities, new users and global businesses.

Sellis previously spent a long time working on consumer social products. He was Snapchat’s first product manager, spent about seven years at Snap and served as vice president of product; he joined Discord in 2022 as senior vice president in charge of product. GeekWire reported in June 2026 that he joined Microsoft, where he was responsible for Copilot design, growth and engineering. In September, he was interviewed on Lenny’s Podcast, and the program introduction said he was between two jobs at the time.

Nikita Bier announced in August 2026 that he was stepping down as X’s head of product and moving into an advisory role. During Bier’s tenure, X did not designate a single product successor, and the design and product teams were each led by multiple people. Sellis’s move fills that product leadership role.

ABAB AI Insight

Sellis’s career path has centered on growth and monetization in consumer social products. At Snap, he rose from the first product manager to vice president, and during that period helped build ad products; at Discord, as senior vice president, he led the product organization and drove user growth. GeekWire’s report shows that in 2026 he joined Microsoft to oversee Copilot design, growth and engineering, representing a cross-over from consumer social into enterprise AI products. This move to X returns him to the consumer social field that has long been his main focus.

X’s head of product role had been managed in a distributed way after Bier stepped down in August. Bier served for about 13 months and during that time X made a number of product changes, and no single successor was named when he left. Sellis’s arrival recentralizes product leadership in one person, and his experience at Snap and Discord aligns directly with X’s current needs in user growth, retention and monetization.

In his announcement, Sellis explicitly linked SpaceX’s multiplanetary mission to X’s product direction and used the phrase “shitposting multiplanetary.” This is consistent with X’s current structure under SpaceX/xAI, but its specific product priorities, such as ads, creator incentives and AI feature integration, will still depend on later decisions rather than the announcement itself.

The key indicators to watch are the pace of concrete changes Sellis makes after taking office to the timeline, creator compensation, ad load and new-user onboarding, and how closely those changes correspond to the “core product value” and “deepen usage from existing users” approach he emphasized during his Snap and Discord years.

  1. Movement of consumer social product leaders often shifts from one platform to the next around centralized product management after growth slows.

  2. If no single successor is named after a product leader leaves, the subsequent appointment recentralizes decision-making power.

  3. When practitioners describe tying a new platform to the long-term goals of other businesses in the same group, the actual priorities still depend on resource allocation rather than the wording of the announcement.
