UK Sanctions HTX, Accused of Assisting in the Transfer of Over $1.5 Billion

The UK has added HTX (Huobi Global S.A.) to its sanctions list against Russia, accusing it of assisting in the transfer of over $1.5 billion through related networks, allegedly helping to evade sanctions.

The EU subsequently followed suit, restricting transactions with HTX. Several major exchanges, including Binance and OKX, announced they would no longer process deposits and withdrawals from HTX, or related accounts could be forcibly frozen.

The sanctions have further isolated HTX from mainstream liquidity networks, increasing the risk for users transferring funds across platforms.

Regulatory actions continue to tighten restrictions on crypto channels related to Russia, with funds flowing from sanctioned exchanges to compliant platforms. The beneficiaries are exchanges that strictly enforce KYC and sanctions screening, while HTX and its users face liquidity pressures, driving the crypto industry to prioritize compliance with sanctions.

HTX, previously one of the major global exchanges, relied on high trading volumes and stablecoin settlements, but has faced sanctions from the UK and EU due to alleged fund flows related to the A7 network and sanctioned entities.

Resources are shifting from open trading to addressing asset freezes and cooperation disruptions, motivated by the need to maintain operations, but the cutoff by mainstream exchanges accelerates its liquidity shrinkage.

Similar to earlier sanctioned Russian platforms like Garantex, current crypto exchanges are transitioning from global access to strict geographical and entity screening, with the industry as a whole shifting from scale expansion to prioritizing compliance with sanctions.

This is essentially a regulatory change, with cross-border funding channels being precisely targeted, where being on the sanctions list directly triggers automatic blocking and account risk control by exchanges, creating a chain isolation effect.
