Base Launches Onchain Identity Verification Tool Verify Onchain

Base Build announced the launch of the onchain identity verification tool Base Verify Onchain on the Base Sepolia testnet, designed to implement the rule of "one claim per real user" in smart contracts to reduce the interference of sybil attacks on airdrops and user incentives.

This tool generates a stable identity hash for each real user, helping project teams identify multiple wallets controlled by the same user, without recording privacy data such as names or account information; users can complete verification through existing accounts like Coinbase, Instagram, X, and TikTok, and the system returns a verified identity credential to the smart contract, which automatically enforces logic for claim limits, voting limits, or quota controls.

Currently, Base Verify has been called over 300,000 times, serving projects like Base App, Cody, Scratch, and Bracket; Base Build stated that Verify Onchain aims to provide fairer airdrops, token distributions, governance voting, and user incentive mechanisms for decentralized applications, and to reduce the disruption to Web3 fairness caused by bots and multi-wallet manipulation by limiting the number of claims per real user, allocating rewards based on real identities, and converting real-world signals into onchain reputation.

The Base team has shifted from initially focusing on low-cost Ethereum Layer 2 scaling to ongoing investments in onchain identity, reputation systems, and compliance bridging. Their long-term path is to "gradually abstract Coinbase's compliance, real-name, and internet account system into programmable onchain identity components," which fundamentally differs from earlier solutions that only focused on exchange sidechains or pure performance optimization.

From a capital perspective, Coinbase has built a closed loop around Base, USDC, and compliant custody over the past few years, consisting of "fiat entry → exchange account → onchain assets → application layer liquidity." Verify Onchain abstracts the "identity and reputation" layer for use in airdrops, voting, and token distribution, essentially migrating user value that could previously only be priced within centralized platforms to a level that open contracts can reference, facilitating projects to allocate tokens based on "real users" rather than "number of addresses."

Similar paths have emerged in the industry: StarkWare's onchain reputation and contract whitelist mechanism, EigenLayer's emphasis on "operator identity and historical performance" in re-staking, and Optimism's early anti-sybil airdrop rules, but they are either too closed in technical stack or disconnected from large-scale internet account systems; in contrast, Base leverages Coinbase and mainstream social platform accounts to position itself in the expansion phase of "identity and payment infrastructure," rather than merely competing in L2 scaling.

Structurally, this represents an overlap of "pricing power transfer" and "industry chain reconstruction": in the past, airdrops and governance rights were mainly negotiated between project parties, professional airdrop farmers, and large holders, lacking verifiable personal identity dimensions; when onchain identity hashes become programmable variables, whoever controls the real user verification channel gains stronger influence in token distribution, governance design, and incentive structures, while also partially reconstructing behavioral data scattered across social platforms and exchanges into "reputation capital" at the Web3 protocol layer.
