Sam Altman says on Jimmy Fallon’s show that he used ChatGPT to help raise his eight-month-old son

Sam Altman and his husband Oliver Mulherin (software engineer) welcomed a son via surrogacy in February 2025. Altman announced it in a post on X on February 22, 2025: he said that he was welcoming the little boy to the world, that the baby had come early, and that he would be in the NICU for a while.

Altman appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on December 8, 2025. When Fallon asked about the baby’s age, Altman said he was eight months old. When Fallon asked whether he used ChatGPT to help raise the child, Altman replied that he felt kind of bad about it and that he could not imagine having gone through figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT. He said that clearly people had done it for a long time with no problem. He gave as an example that he had once asked ChatGPT because his son was not crawling.

This event contains two time points: the surrogacy birth announcement in February 2025 and the television interview in December 2025. In the interview, Altman described ChatGPT as a consultation tool in raising a newborn and publicly said that he relied on it heavily, while also acknowledging that people had long managed without it.

In public reports, his husband Oliver Mulherin is described as a software engineer, and the two married in 2024. Public details about the surrogacy process and the surrogate mother are limited; it is only confirmed that the baby was born early and was admitted to the NICU.

The interview was in the format of a late-night talk show, with the content centered on personal experience and product use. Follow-up attention will focus on OpenAI-related business developments and whether Altman discloses further family-related details.
