Solflare staking service provider suffers security incident affecting validators

SolanaFloor reported that Solflare said its staking service provider suffered a security incident that affected the keys it held for its validators. The validator is currently no longer generating staking rewards.

Solflare said user funds were not affected, and the delegated SOL remains in users’ own staking accounts and is controlled by their keys. The company will guide users to migrate to a new validator through an app update, rewards will resume after staking is activated, and it plans to compensate users who migrate.

The incident was limited to the validator keys on the service provider side and did not involve user wallets or the delegated assets themselves. Solflare is advancing the migration process to restore users’ staking returns.

ABAB AI Insight

This incident reflects the separation between validator operational keys and users’ delegated assets in staking services. Users’ SOL remains controlled by their own keys and does not enter the service provider’s custody, reducing the risk of direct asset loss. After the validator stops generating rewards, users need to be guided through the app to migrate to a new validator in order to restore reward generation. The compensation plan targets migrating users and aims to cover losses during the interruption of rewards. Points to watch going forward are the completion rate of migrations, the timing of the new validator going live, and the scope and criteria for compensation distribution.

Cognitive laws

  • Damage to validator keys stops rewards, while users’ delegated assets remain controlled by their own keys.

  • The service provider guides migration to restore rewards rather than directly custodying users’ assets.

  • The compensation mechanism covers interruptions in rewards during migration, lowering users’ switching costs.
