Reddit Launches AI Moderation Tool Rules Hub to Gradually Replace Automod
Reddit is introducing an automated moderation tool called Rules Hub, based on large language models, to assist in moderating newly established subreddits and eventually cover the entire site, helping moderators manage their communities.
This tool allows moderators to decide on rules for automatic enforcement and subsequent actions, evaluating whether content aligns with the intended rules through LLM, which can handle nuances and edge cases better than the keyword-matching Automod; it has been tested in over 700 communities and is now expanding to all new communities, with widespread availability expected in late 2026, and it will be optional for new communities, but is planned to ultimately replace many Automod workflows.
The community moderation is shifting from keyword-based rules to intent understanding, benefiting moderator efficiency while reducing reliance on traditional Automod.

Reddit has long relied on volunteer moderators and Automod to handle vast amounts of content, with AI tools previously used for some safety filtering; Rules Hub aims to lower maintenance costs and improve accuracy by understanding rule intent through LLM.
On the capital path, the company is expanding adoption through optional testing, motivated by reducing the burden on moderators and improving the experience for new users; resources are shifting from precise matching systems to semantic understanding systems while retaining ultimate control for moderators.
Similar cases can be seen in other social platforms introducing AI-assisted moderation; currently, Reddit is transitioning from a human + rules engine to a human-machine collaborative intent moderation phase.
This essentially represents a technological substitution: content moderation is shifting from keyword triggers to natural language intent judgment, with the mechanism being LLM's handling of edge cases, reducing false positives and enhancing scalable management capabilities.
