Ledger announces new device Ledger Atom’s physical privacy switch and opens Founders Edition preorders
Ledger announced the Privacy Switch feature for its new device, Ledger Atom. Flipping the switch cuts power to the camera and microphone at the circuit level. Ledger says no app, malware, or remote attacker can turn them back on.
The Secure Bar on the device shows the switch position. In Secure Mode, the camera and microphone remain unpowered regardless of the switch position. Ledger has also opened preorders for the Founders Edition of Ledger Atom, with shipping expected in summer 2027 and a preorder price of $849, requiring a refundable deposit of $100.
Ledger Atom runs everyday apps while handling sensitive operations through Ledger OS on a separate Secure Element. The company states on its product page and in its FAQ that this physical switch is not a software setting and cannot be bypassed.

Ledger is extending the security model of a traditional hardware wallet to a device that can run everyday apps. The key change is the introduction of a physical Privacy Switch that cuts power to the camera and microphone at the circuit level rather than through software. This design directly addresses the problem of software settings being bypassed by malware or remote attackers, moving privacy control down from operating-system permissions to the hardware circuit.
The device also uses a dual-environment architecture: the standard mode runs everyday apps, while Secure Mode has Ledger OS on a separate Secure Element take over the screen and sensitive operations. Secure Mode automatically cuts power to the camera and microphone, forming a dual mechanism together with the physical switch. The Secure Bar is controlled by Ledger OS and is used to show the user the current mode and switch status, reducing the risk of screen spoofing.
Compared with traditional Ledger hardware wallets, Atom changes both form and purpose, moving from an offline signer to a device that can connect to everyday apps, while retaining the same signing assurance model. The combination of the physical switch and Secure Mode means privacy control no longer depends on whether an app or operating system has been compromised.
Opening Founders Edition preorders, allowing a refundable deposit, and specifying a summer 2027 shipping window moves the product from concept to a pre-order stage. The difference between circuit-level disconnection and a software setting, along with Secure Mode’s forced power-off, constitutes the specific privacy mechanism that distinguishes this device from a normal smartphone.

After the camera and microphone power are cut at the circuit level, malicious code or remote commands at the software layer cannot turn them back on.
Secure Mode automatically powers off the sensors, regardless of the physical switch position, creating a forced privacy mechanism that does not depend on user action.
