Mirae Asset Acquires South Korean Crypto Exchange Korbit, Rebranding to Digital X

Mirae Asset Consulting has acquired a majority stake in Korbit, increasing its ownership to 97.15%, with a total transaction value of approximately 141.4 billion KRW.

The Korea Fair Trade Commission approved the transaction on July 9, 2026. Mirae Asset stated that user deposits and core trading services will remain unchanged, and Korbit will be renamed Digital X.

The buyer is Mirae Asset, and the seller is the established exchange Korbit; the focus of this transaction is not on increasing trading volume but on integrating digital assets, securities, and asset management capabilities onto the same platform, challenging the traditional independent exchange model.

Digital X is positioned as an infrastructure platform connecting RWA tokenization, security token issuance, stablecoins, traditional securities, and digital assets, and will continue to operate based on Korbit's existing licenses and user base.

Mirae Asset's move resembles a traditional asset management group's integration into the crypto space rather than merely acquiring an exchange. After taking over Korbit, it is not pursuing spot trading volume but rather integrating securities, asset management, and on-chain asset issuance into the same distribution system.

From a capital perspective, the core of Digital X is not "trading" but the "issuance, circulation, and custody chain after asset tokenization." This means Mirae Asset aims to connect its clients, licenses, and risk control capabilities from traditional finance to the digital asset infrastructure.

In analogy, this approach is more akin to large brokerages or asset management firms acquiring clearing, custody, or trading infrastructure and unifying front-end products onto a single platform. It differs from exchanges that rely solely on transaction fees, targeting control over entry points, rules, and distribution.

Essentially, this represents a reconstruction of the industry chain: as RWA, STO, stablecoins, and traditional securities begin to coexist on the same platform, value will no longer belong solely to the party facilitating transactions but will concentrate on the infrastructure with licenses, clearing, and asset management capabilities.
