Meta Chief Strategy Officer Dave Wehner leaves, joins AI inference startup Fireworks as CFO

Meta Chief Strategy Officer Dave Wehner confirmed on November 6 that he was leaving the company to join AI inference startup Fireworks as chief financial officer. Wehner posted on X that he announced earlier this week that he was leaving Meta and thanked Mark Zuckerberg.

Wehner joined Facebook in 2012 as vice president of corporate finance and business planning, was promoted to chief financial officer in 2014, and after more than eight years in the role, became chief strategy officer in 2022. Before joining Facebook, he was chief financial officer of Zynga and a managing director at investment bank Allen & Company.

Fireworks CEO Lin Qiao posted a welcome to Wehner, saying that he experienced Meta during the company's most defining growth phase. Fireworks is an AI inference platform founded by former members of Meta's PyTorch team, and it currently serves more than 400 trillion tokens per day, 95% of which come from models customized by customers based on their own data. The company completed a $1.505 billion Series D financing round in July this year, at a valuation of $17.5 billion.

Meta Chief Strategy Officer Dave Wehner confirmed on November 6 that he was leaving the company to join AI inference startup Fireworks as chief financial officer. Wehner posted that he thanked Mark Zuckerberg and was optimistic about Meta's future.

In terms of career and business path, Wehner joined Facebook in 2012, was promoted to CFO in 2014, and after serving for more than eight years, became chief strategy officer in 2022. Before joining, he served as Zynga CFO and managing director of Allen & Company. Fireworks was founded by former members of Meta's PyTorch team, serves more than 400 trillion tokens per day, 95% of which come from customer-customized models. The company completed a $1.505 billion Series D financing round in July this year, at a valuation of $17.5 billion, and annualized revenue has exceeded $1 billion.

Compared with Wehner's long tenure at Meta, this move to Fireworks is a shift from a large platform to a startup CFO role. The similarity is that both involve enterprise AI and growth; the key difference is that Fireworks focuses on open-model inference and customer customization, rather than a large consumer social platform. Wehner said that AI has been the most impactful technological shift in his career.

For Fireworks, bringing in a former Meta CFO and CSO can strengthen financial and strategic capabilities, especially during a period of rapidly rising valuation. For Meta, Wehner's departure removes a long-time executive, but the company had already completed the transition of his role. For the AI inference market, this appointment reflects the movement of executives from large technology companies to high-growth inference platforms.
