SoftBank's Son Selects Malaysia Sites for Planned $50 Billion Investment
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed that SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son has selected a location in Malaysia for a technology project, planning to invest $50 billion in AI infrastructure-related projects, including data centers.
According to Bloomberg, Anwar Ibrahim stated that he had a video conference with Son last Tuesday, during which Son confirmed the selection of relevant areas in the country. SoftBank had not immediately responded to requests for comments at the time of the report.
Anwar disclosed this information during an event in Malacca on October 24, 2026. He noted that the investment locations include Kuching in Sarawak and areas in Peninsular Malaysia, covering fields such as AI, new technologies, and data centers, and described it as one of the largest investments in the region.
He stated that the investment is expected to create better job opportunities for Malaysian youth and emphasized the need to strengthen skills training in areas such as AI, digitalization, and semiconductors, to enable the local workforce to enter higher value-added segments.
Previously, on October 8, 2026, SoftBank Group signed a framework agreement with Grab Holdings and Petroleum Sarawak (PETROS) to explore the development of AI and digital infrastructure platforms in Sarawak. This agreement is still in the exploratory phase and does not involve specific investment amounts.
Currently, the $50 billion plan is in the site selection and intention phase, with specific implementation timelines, project details, financing arrangements, and job numbers yet to be disclosed.

ABAB AI Insight
SoftBank's official announcement says it invested the final $10 billion tranche in OpenAI on October 1, 2026, completing the previously announced $30 billion follow-on investment. Its cumulative investment reached $64.6 billion, with an ownership interest of approximately 13%. A separate announcement says SoftBank acquired all outstanding DigitalBridge common shares for approximately $3.1 billion on September 30. DigitalBridge manages investments in digital infrastructure, including data centers, towers and fiber networks.
Financing must be assessed project by project. SoftBank's October 1 announcement identifies proceeds from foreign-currency senior notes as the funding source for the final OpenAI tranche. This does not establish that the $50 billion Malaysia plan will use the same financing or already has funding in place. As an analytical assessment, execution of this plan still requires scrutiny of its own financing, approvals and project arrangements.
A Reuters report dated December 19, 2016, refers to Son's $50 billion U.S. investment pledge to then President-elect Donald Trump. That provides a historical comparison for large regional investment announcements, but the report does not establish that the entire pledge was ultimately delivered. For the Malaysia plan, pledged amounts, project agreements and actual spending likewise need separate verification; similar headline amounts do not imply similar outcomes.
Investments in a model developer, acquisition of an infrastructure asset manager and regional site selection suggest an expansion across the AI industry. This is an analytical interpretation, not SoftBank's formal execution plan for the Malaysia project. Financing capacity, energy availability, approvals and execution are conditions to monitor; the available material does not establish that all are satisfied or that the plan will necessarily be delivered.
